Can you confirm word after Archibald Buchanan
« on: Thursday 25 January 07 01:33 GMT (UK) »
Check the attachment please, is it Salter after Archibald Buchanan, I was led to beleive all Buchanans had been fisherman on my side. It could be Salter as there were Salt Pans at Cockenzie and next door at Prestonpans.

I printed out his daughters marriage OPR later, and it gives father's name and occupation, and it definitely is Salter. She was married im the Old Kirk in Edinburgh to a publican, Daniel Bain. Now there is another tangent to fly off in.

Thanks for confirmation, Prue.

Hi Tom,

I just wondered...

What did 'Salters' do? Did they deal with salt as a commodity, - or did they salt fish, etc?

Cheers, Romilly.

Romilly,

They made salt, Prestonpans used to be known as "Saltpans" and in time, because the priests were involved in moving coal from Acheson's Haven etc, the name became "Priest Town Pans" or as we know it Prestonpans. I understand salt is still manufactured their today, but not to the same extent as in the old days.

Many thanks for the info Tom.

Its interesting to see how many Occupations have now disappeared, - or changed titles completely. (And I had no idea before how Prestonpans got its name).

Cheers, Romilly.

Most definitely salter. My 6th x g grandfather made salt after he arrived in Massachusetts, USA. It is one of those occupations that have "gone away".
