Medals returned???!!
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 10:52 GMT (UK) »
I just got the medal cards for two rellies who were killed ww1. One of them (killed in 1918) has this info next to his two medals (Victory and British)

Retd: 1743 KR 1912    8316 adt

what does this mean? I have looked on the site but can't find anything other than returned medals for mistranscriptios, that has a different code number.

also, at the bottom of the card are these codes : E/675768/2
 and  EF/9/4360(7) then 8316 adt K1880

Any info would be great, Thanks!

Hi,

The medal with Retd - means it was returned for some reason
People did not apply for their medals they were automatically sent out to the addresses. If the people moved then the'd be returned to the medal office. Or, another reason for return of medals is perhaps because the details inscribed on the rim was incorrect.

The other code number at the bottom of the card perhaps refers to the roll number and page where the information can be found at the National Archives [E/ ............]

Maybe best you post the medal card details  so as someone can decipher a better interpretation.  ;)

Had a look at the medal card and it confirms that the medals were returned. I think that after 'Retd' they have a code number in brackets with KR 1912 - could be as per Kings Regs 1912.

The RFA 248B is the Roll Code or Reference Code, with the Page Number showing as 29672.
These are  presumably the references needed for you to look up any further information on a visit to Kew. His documents might tell you just how he 'died' for instance.  As you can see it records 'Died' and the date of death (18/11/18).

What  does the 8136/adt stands for ...?

Also cannot say what the E/675...... numbers are, or if they are of any significance to you.  One thought was that they might be a reference to where the medals were filed on return.  So they might be useful to you in future.  ::)

If you have KR Para 1912 on his MIC. this says that his medals were destroy after 10 years.

K.R. 1912 para 1743 medals unclaimed after 10 years to be sent to be broken up to the deputy director of stores Royal Dockyard, Woolwick.
