Elizabeth Ellis
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 21:39 GMT (UK) »
Looking for birth information and emigration of Elizabeth Ellis born 1859 in Canada. I believe she was born in Ontario but I can't / couldn't locate. I think the family emigrated to Canada in the late 1850s.

Her parents are / may have been Sam'l / Samuel Ellis and Harriet (maiden name may have been Trounson). Her parents and several siblings were born in England.

Thanks in advance and any information or leads to further information will be appreciated.

Hi KarenM -

Thanks for you prompt response. In response to your questions.

No the family didn't stay in Canada for very long.

I located the family in the Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio 1860 census (enumeration date of 15 June 1870). I then located Sam'l (father) in the San Francisco, California census in 1870. However, I can't find the rest of the family in 1870.

Other siblings (and ages per the 1860 census) were George 5, Mary A. 8, Eliza 10, Harriet Jane 12, and Samuel 14. I also have an old picture of some of the children ... as adults.

You likely have Samuel and Elizabeth ( as lizzie) on the 1880 U.S.....St Louis...
but was wondering if Mary isn't May A. just as on the census, as she married Charles
Henry Sanders in 1877, Missouri...listed as May A. ( extracted- IGI)
There is also a Margaret ... (as Maggie) born Ohio in '62...(You had said they were in Ohio on the 60...) a grandson & nephew also in household

or is this just a coincidence?

Hi J.J.

That wasn't George (my George) in New York with the Russels

I know much later in life Mary started going by Polly and George went by George Jr. even though I have no idea who George Sr. was.

They were somewhere in the Midwest (possible Illinois per my Dad) but also in California. I somehow think part of the family went back to Canada but still have lots of places to check out. I know they are there somewhere ... people just don't disappear ....

Hi J.J.

I am suspect of the 1880 census in St Louis since I have found the Ellis family listed twice.

Sorry to repeat part of your message here ...

Charles H. Sanders, May Sanders, Samuel Ellis, Lizzie Ellis and Maggie Ellis in District 89 in St. Louis

Samuel Ellis, Lissie G Ellis, Maggie T. Ellis, C.H.Sanders, May A. Sanders, May H. Sanders and Harry Kennedy also in St Louis.

The ages are the same, birth countries are the same, however, relationships are different (sensible due to different heads of households) and so are the some of the occupations.

Lots or work ahead of me.

Thanks again for your replies to my posts.
