John Gandy

I'm  looking for a John Gandy known to be in the Wolverhampton area around 1778 He married a Hannah
DOB abt1758 place unknown and had the following offspring
Charles Christened 21st June 1778 St Leonard's Bilston
Edward                         26th March 1786    //
Mary                             24th June 1788     //
John 2nd Jan 1793 St Lawrence Darlaston  died 29th Dec 1793
Sarah                    20th Jan 1795 St Lawrence Darlaston

There are quite a few Gandy christenings in Longton from 1733 to 1797  on the BIVRIndex CDs.

 This could well be the John Gandy I'm looking for, his wife Hannah was still alive in the 1841 census for Bilston,
Wolverhampton at the age of 93 and it does state that she is of Bilston(but at that age, who knows?) So the marriage could have taken place around Wolverhampton(No record found as yet) and the first child born in 1778
The canal system opened up around Wolverhampton in 1772 linking the River Seven, Stoke and Liverpool area so this could well be a strong link.
Thanks your Brill, Ive been spending my time looking around the Shropshire area to no avail.

Me again,
  This is not going to be my John Gandy, he should have a birth of around 1758ish. But I just wonder if Elizabeth could be his sister in-law as she was having kids around the same time as John, this would then bring a possible family area link with Longton and its also very near the canal system so well worth the search.
How far back do the Longton church records go for St Johns as many churches are only just being built around this time and have you any idea which may have been the main church for the area in the 1750s if St Johns had not been built?

The British Isles Vital Records Index CDs are 16 cds from the Distribution Centre Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints 399 Garretts Green Lane Birmingham B33 OUH

They are about £22.95. They have approx 10.4 million birth and christening records and 1.9 million marriage records from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.  But, not all records are on them.  I have found about 4 of mine so far.


If you click on this link it will take you to the Longton page on Genuki and give you some history of Longton and tell you where the church records are kept for St Johns and St James Churches.

Another little tip :- if you type Genuki  Staffordshire full contents   into search it will take you to all the information on Staffordshire.  Whichever area you are looking for just type it in instead of Staffordshire. for instance if you are looking fo info on Shropshire Type Genuki Shropshire full contents into search.
