Tidwell or Williamson?
« on: Thursday 01 February 07 08:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have finally traced the birth of my paternal grandfather, Henry Frank Miles - his father did not register names for most of his children, but the date of birth and other info verified that his birth was registered with father John Miles and mother Diana, formerly Williamson.
My problem is that although there are several children listed for these two people, no other record can be found of Diana Williamson.  There is a record of several children (one a definite brother, John,  of Henry Frank) registered to John Miles and Dinah Tidwell, and there was a marriage between John Miles and Dinah Tidwell.
The problem was added to when I found a number of family trees which include a Diana Williamson, linked to John Miles, but with no other info about her existence.
Can anyone suggest where I can look for further information, or explain the difference in names?  In her will, Dinah Miles referred to her older son John and to her youngest child Frank (Henry was known by his second name)?  Please? Any assistance gratefully accepted.

hello  there

how about  time frames  and states  please  that way  we can  offer  more advice
Also  do  you  have  her  death  certifcate?
Another possibility  is  that she  may  have been  married  before  to a tidwell  and  her maiden  name  was williamson  or  vicaversa

have  found  that a  bit  with  children  births  being registered  in  the  mothers  maiden  name  rather  than  her first married  name, thus adding a  little  confusion  to it all.

Hi Jenn,
Sorry about the lack of detail.  Thanks for looking - you found the right couple in Hobart.  I have a marriage certificate, death certificates and wills for both John Miles and Dinah (Tidwell) Miles.  On the marriage certificate Dinah is listed as Spinster.  Dinah's death certificate has her as born in Hobart Town, but I haven't found any evidence of that yet (she died in 1876 and was recorded as age 50 on the death certificate.  John died four years earlier.)
My grandfather was born 09-07-1866 in Hobart.  I have been able to link some of the other unrecorded names by birth date with names from Grandfather's "birthday book" which I found in Mum's effects yesterday!
A further complication is the birth of a male to Dinah Tidwell, reg. as Charles Stephen Tidwell (04-01-1842) with no father named; marriage of Stephen Miles to Margarte Hart (Newcastle, 29-09-1873) with Stephen's parents listed as John Miles and Diane or Dinah Williamson; born 1841, Hobart Town;and a reference in Colonial Tasmanian Family Links to Dinah Tidwell having a relationship with Samuel Harvey and the birth of a male (Harvey) child in 1842.
My parents spoke little about the past, but did say Grandfather had a brother Stephen who left home before Grandfather was born.  I suspect that all these are the same person.
But none of this explains the Diana Williamson references!
Oh, and all I know about John Miles' background is that he was a mariner (Royal Navy?), worked as a shipwright, and came to Australia from Bristol in the early nineteenth century (family lore).
So that is what I am working from - hope something there gives someone a clue as to where I go next!!
Regards,
Jen

hello  there

now  I  don't  know whther  or  not  you  have  the folowing

but JOHN TIDWELL married Margaret Keef  on 5/11/1844 he was an adult and she a minor ref 1142/1844 in hobart

so looks as  if  brother and sister  married  on  the same day or  father and daughter etc

a john tidwell also married in 1856 to Bridget Dawson adult 21/1/1856 hobart 268/1856

now  there was a child name not recorded to Samuel Harvey and Dinah Tidwell 4/1/1842 hobart 866/1842

also Charles stephen Tidwell baptised 4/1/1842 hobart 2104/1843 RDG32

so  by  the indexs  Charles was baptised on  the day the unamed baby  was  born?

hope  this  helps
