could'nt find any births for scales (with that spelling) but found index for two marriages. john scales married mary mckeown 1862. (his name could be john james)  and william scales married maria wilson 1870.(his name could be william james). thats provided he married here.         found a thomas and samuel scales, griffiths valuation  of ire. derry 1859. don't know if this is any help to you.

And after your 1839 but before Mary's findings for 1862/70, it would seem that a John Scales married a Sarah Deans in 1849, a Samuel Scales married a Sarah Gilmour in the same year then a Mary Scales married a Matthew McArthur in 1855 and also that year,  an Isabella Scales married a Robert Lamont.

Thankyou both for your replys its very hard when all you have is born Derry Ireland!! I am going on the birth certificate of his daughter,which was 1862 and he states he is 23 years old so many times the information not correct.He immigrated or was sent to Australia.
