Maria Burchill
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 16:33 GMT (UK) »
I look for the date and place of Maria Burchill's death.

She married,at the age of 32 years (widow), Benjamin Heazle (23) on January 20th, 1853 at Saint Peters United Church of the Ballymodan Parish in Bandon.

She died before April 4th, 1860 wedding date in St-George, Bermuda, of Benjamin Heazle with Ann Evans.

Benjamin joined the 39th Regiment of Foot of the British army in 1854. He was in Crimea in 1855-56, in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) from 1856 till 1959 and in Bermuda from 1860 till 1865.

I do not know if Maria followed the Regiment. I did not find her decease in Quebec.

The date of decease would allow to find who is the mother of the son Benjamin been born on April 10th, 1858in Montreal. We do not find the certificate of Benjamin's christening jr and the name of his parents is not mentioned on his wedding certificate.

Thank you

nicole44,

In what country is Ballymodan Parish in Bandon?

Do you have the son Benjamin's death certificate?  That might list his mother's full name.

Josephine

Thanks, Karen!

It sounded like an Irish place-name but I didn't know.   ;)

That's too bad because she won't be able to search the census.

nicole44,

If the son's death record doesn't list his mother's name, have you written to the church where the first marriage took place?  Maybe they had a cemetery and the first wife was buried there, if that is where she was from?

Josephine

Hi nicole44,

The births, marriages, and deaths of British soldiers and their families posted in Canada were not usually recorded in the Canadian records, nor were they usually included on the Canadian censuses.  The British government had special BMD registers for citizens overseas (usually military).  I don't know how good the coverage is in these registers, but it might be worth a search as Maria's death or Benjamin's birth might be registered.  They are indexed in a similar way to the regular British BMD records and then you have to purchase the certificate to get the full info.  But to my knowledge the overseas registers are currently only available to search on pay sites like 1837online.  They are not available on Ancestry or freeBMD.

Hope that helps.

Bandon is a city of Ireland in the county of Cork. We found nothing to Bandon about the death of Maria Burchill. I have Benjamin's death certificate (son), and the name of the parents is not registered. I searched  to the National Archives of Quebec over several years after Benjamin's birth, in case the baptism would have taken place years later, and I found nothing.

Than you for your help
