Florence May Hancock: 1893 - 1974
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 21:32 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any information on Florence May Hancock, born Chippenham, Wilts, May/June 1893. She went on to become President of the TUC and became a Dame. Believed to have lived and worked in Bristol for much of her life. Strong on womens rights. Any info please, this lady is a relative of my wife and the local museum wish to run a feature on her.

Hello ARG and welcome to Rootschat :)
If your local library has access to the Times Digital archive, they will find quite an extensive obituary for Dame Hancock in the Times for Tuesday April 16th 1974 which provides quite a bit of detail about a her life [7 paragraphs in total] form her birth in Chippenham, to her marriage in 1964.

hope this helps

Thank you both for the information. The Times Digital was a good source, I now have a copy of this.

Hi! Florence was my Great Great Aunt. Her father Jacob was married before and already had five children one of which was my Great Grandfather.

A really good source of information about auntie Floss is the Dictionary of Labor Biography, available online.

There are also two portraits of her in the National Portrait Gallery, which can also be viewed online.

If I can be of any more help, please let me know.

Hello, thanks for your reply. The interest in Florence is on my wife's side. Florence was my wife's Grandmother's step-sister from his later marriage. Since the date of my initial enquiry I have managed to acquire more information and now have a copy of one of the Portrait Gallery pictures. I also have some copies of old British Pathe news film which I downloaded from their site. This now seem to have disappeared. Chippenham Museum has quite a lot of information and has bought the rights to some of the Pathe film. Any further information is always welcome.

Regards

Florence May Hancock was also my Great Great Aunt, I come from Devon and all my family are located there now. Where are you all located? It seems we have one big family here :)

Hi there,
My name is Ruth, my great-grandfather was William Hancock, a son of Jacob. William was a Grocer's Porter, who lived in Chippenham. He was married to Sarah Jane Barrett, who was from West Overton. William died in his 30s of Rheumatic fever. My grandfather was very young when he died. Grandpa was very close to auntie Floss and her sister who spent a lot of time living with my grandfather and his brothers and sisters as they grew up. Auntie Floss was much the same age as grandpa. Grandpa moved to Birmingham when he got back from fighting in Siberia during the Russian Revolution. This was due to lack of work in Chippenham. He went on to have two children Raymond and Brenda (my Mum). Raymond had three children John, an eminent Professor in the USA, Jane, a Physicist who works for British Aerospace and Sally, who teaches English in Portugal. I was an only child and I am currently training to be a Psychologist. I am also friends with another great-niece of auntie Floss, who lives in Mells. Hope this is of interest!

Incidentally, ARG, was your wife's grandmother's step sister my auntie Kath or auntie Doris? I would be really interested to know! :-)
