William Burley - finding his mother
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 06:08 GMT (UK) »
Can someone help me sort this out please?  I am looking for a Paul Burley who married Elizabeth (do not know her name).
The IGI gives me a Paul Burley who married  Elizabeth Bond on 18 October 1804 at All Saints Pavement and St. Peter the Little, York.
The IGI also cites a Paul Burley who married Elizabeth Burn on 10 January 1805 at All Saints Pavement and St Peter the Little, York.
Is this error or two different marriages?  William son of Paul and Elizabeth Burley was baptised at the same church on 21 February 1805.
How do I sort out which Elizabeth is the mother of William?

Hello Marp

It could relate to records of banns and marriage - although the dates seem somewhat a long time apart, so it could be different people.

On checking the LDS reference, the film used for the IGI is for the Bishop's Transcripts of your parish, not the parish records, so it will be very useful if you can get access to the parish records.  Looking at the LDS film library, they do have film of the parish records so if you are unable to find them another way, you could order the film at your local LDS Centre. Hopefully you will find some errors in transcriptions which resolve the issue. if there are, in fact, two separate marriages & four different folks, it could be very tricky!

Hi Marp,

I had a look at the church registers for you.

The baptism provides some useful information:

Name: William BURLEY, 1st child, son of

Father's details: Paul BURLEY servant son of the late Richard BURLEY of Green Hammerton tailor by Hannah his wife

Abode: Feasegate

Mother's details: Elizabeth daughter Robert BURN of Beverley gardener

Born: 14 Feb 1805, baptised 21 Feb 1805

So William's mother is Elizabeth BURN.

The two marriage entries are very odd the first on 18 Oct 1804 says Paul BURLEY is of Dringhouses/servant/bach/age 30 and Elizabeth BOND/otp/spinster/age 21 - the marriage was by licence. Witnesses John Tale and Geo. Brown

The second on 10 Jan 1805 says Paul BURLEY is otp/servant/age 30 and Elizabeth BURN otp/age 21 - this time it is by banns.  Witnesses Elizabeth Burley and Thomas Rounding.  No marital status is given for the couple at the second marriage.

At both ceremonies Paul BURLEY makes his mark and Elizabeth signs.

My gut feeling is that it is the same couple but why two ceremonies and the differing names for Elizabeth I have no idea  ???

I hope this is of some help.

Marp,

Looking at IGI there are some more possible children for this couple:

MARIA BURLEY bap. 27 FEB 1814 Saint Mary Bishophill Junior, York

SARAH BURLEY bap. 29 DEC 1817 Holy Trinity Micklegate, York

ROBERT BURLEY bap. 26 MAR 1820 Tadcaster, Yorkshire

HANNAH BURLEY bap. 4 JUL 1824 Tadcaster, Yorkshire

and maybe even MARIA BURLEY bap. 31 JAN 1809 Winthorpe, Nottingham  ???

Thank you very much for sorting out the Burley's for me.  Given the information from the baptismal register for William it looks as if Elizabeth Burn is the mother and whatever the riddle concerning the two marriages this is the one I should concentrate on.

Thank you again and many thanks for finding more children of the couple.  I had discovered William and also Robert and Hannah (my ancestor) both baptised in Tadcaster but not the others.

Thanks again.   Any information on the Burley family is appreciated as they have been difficult to track.
