Born At Sea
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 09:50 GMT (UK) »

Morning All,

I'm fairly new to Rootschat.  I don't know if  this is of interest to anybody.  I was on Ancestry.co.uk a few minutes ago and I typed in At Sea in the Parish or Place box and it came back with 1,948 names of people born at sea.  I thought maybe if you couldn't find a place of birth for your ancestors you might find it on there.  I suppose a lot you already knew that, but maybe some didn't.

Worth a go, I suppose.  If anybody wants me to have a quick look for them, let me know.

Thanks for the offer Tony. Could you look up my aunt?
Margaret Dexter Gardner
born 4 March 1894 at sea

She was born on "J.H.Dexter". I was told it was in the Carribean and her birth was registered in London. However, recently a cousin said she was born on the way to London, Atlantic Ocean?, instead.
I know that she was a British citizen because the Dexter was a Canadian vessel flying a British flag.

Aghadowey,

Sorry, I've looked through every name and can't find a Margaret Gardner.   But on the 1901 census there is a Margaret Gardner born 1895 at sea, no more details. It just gives a vessel number, number 39.  I don't know where you'd check what vessel tha number relates to.
The census was taken in Newcastle Upon Tyne and she was living with her parents William M and Margaret J Gardner and Alexander J Gardner.

Sorry to be pedantic but this presumes that all birth "At Sea" have been recorded as such.
It will also be necessary to search for such descriptions as "Born on the Sea" which gives the following result:

  1 1841 England Census
  79 1861 England Census
  2 1861 Wales Census
  66 1871 England Census
  2 1871 Wales Census
  10 1881 England Census
  2 1891 Channel Islands Census
  42 1891 England Census
  2 1891 Wales Census
  31 1901 England Census
  3 1901 Wales Census
Modified
I thought that it would be better just to use the word "Sea" but that misses out all of those born on the Ocean.
And I'll bet there are even more possibilities
