Aweston
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 15:57 GMT (UK) »
excuse my ignorance of Irish geography/history but can any one tell me anything about Aweston, Offaly in  late 1700 earlier 1800.

My GGGGgrandad was from Aweston and born about 1795. Can anyone advice how I could find his birth/baptism or who his parents were (can't find him on IGI/BMD or Ancestry)
His name was Bernard Irons
Wadkins (Middlesex), Hankin (Midldlesex) Clews (Cheshire), Walters (Cumberland) Irons (Ireland) Doorley(Dawley) Ireland,
Fletcher (Cheshire/Lancashire) King (Newark Notts) Pickering (Cheshire)

 Hello ZKT,
There is no Townland or civil Parish with the name Aweston.
                in Kings Offaly.

Hiya ZXT,

I tried www.thecore.com/seanruad The words starting with "A" or ending with "ton" show no word that begins to look like "Aweston" Is the place name written on a document that you could post so that members can have a look and see what they think? I'd suggest you also send an email to Offaly County Library HQ to see if they are able to assist with this placename.

Chris

I don't have a scanner to put the document on line and it isn't a very good photocopy anyway.
I have just got back from the National Archives at Kew.
The info is from Bernard Irons military discharge papers

He joined the 66th Foot in 1809, age13, and was refered to as Barney, was injured in battle in Spain and was discharged 1815. age 19. (How awful for such a young man to be in battle)

The records state he was fromthe parish of Awstown in or near the town of Ben (or Bin) in the county of Kings .
TNA have the parish transcribed as Aweston but I think it look more like Awstown

Can anyone identify this place? If so do the parish records survive?

As the period I am looking at is 200 years ago is it possible the place doesn't exist any more?

Hi  ZkT That is possible, you would also find then that people would write, what it sounded like to them,at that time.
      Offaly comes under Laois
 Irish Midlands Ancestry
    Bury Quay
    Tullamore
    Co, Offaly    www.irishmidlandsancestry.com
Ok it's a full commissioned research service.
Almost all church records,as well as a wide range of other sources.
But I don't think you are going to get any where without some
good research help. From the experts.
If you do take something like this up, I would be most interested to hear if they knew of Awstown.

Balawak and Aweston sound like names being written down from the sound of them. Ballawak is probably Bally___. 'Aweston' could be some name that starts with an A or an H.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
