Dorset Coastguard
« on: Sunday 21 November 04 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any knowledge of how to get information on the coastguard service in Dorset in 1901.
John Joseph Baker from Rochford Essex, and his wife Florence Penwarden from Plymouth lived in the Packstone area, John who was ex Royal Navy as a coastguard, but family records say that he ended up in Torquay?  Any help appreciated.  Lindy

Coastguard records are kept at the National Archives in Kew, probably in class ADM. But you can find also find coastguard officers listed in the annual Navy List.  You may be able to track his postings that way, if you can hold of them.  Some reference libraries have them, and so do the SoG.

Good luck

You have probably already seen this but just in case you haven’t!  There is a document appertaining to John Joseph Baker’s service available to download from the National Archives Documents Online but it’ll cost £3.50.
The link is:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Click on the “Search Now” button in the Royal Navy Seaman box and at the next screen just fill in his first names and last name – no need to fill in the other boxes - then click the “Search” button at top right of the box.
