Bearman Family Are you out there?
« on: Monday 22 November 04 12:02 GMT (UK) »
:P  Having discovered that my Ancestor William Bearman born c 1812 was born in Barking Essex.  Is there anyone out there with Bearman connections in Essex?

This family are hard to pin down.  As he marries in Devon, has a child in Somerset and another in Hampshire, before finally settling Greenwich (Kent).  Maybe his forbears in Essex are more stable.

Hi tac,
No I'm afraid West Tilbury or Stanford le Hope have no connection at the moment.  But maybe I'll come up with something at a later date,  Bearman is such an uncommon name.

regards

I noticed these BEARMANs baptisms at Essex Record Office in Chelmsford Parish D/P 94/1/14
page 382 Oct 1 1864 Ada Elizabeth
page 395 Mar 17 1866 William Lewis
The parents were Henry and Selina BEARMAN of Railway Street. He was a miller.
In Leytonstone (which is now part of East London but which was once part of Essex) there was a posh department store called BEARMANs. Think 'Grace Brothers in Are you being served' and that was BEARMANs

Hi,

I have loads of Bearman's, but they are BOCKING not Barking.  The Bearmans go way back in that parish, or certainly as far back as I can read the records.

To Neve,
I am beginning to wonder if my William born 1812 isn't from Bocking.  I was sent the 1861 census details for William by a lovely rootschatter called Carol.  So I didn't see the entry myself and Barking /Bocking could look very similar.  I had noticed that there seemed to be a lot of Bocking Bearman's.

Do you have any William's in your tree?  My William who married in Devon in 1842 and had children in Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and Greenwich and had ocupations ranging from shoemaker to Royal Marine and finally sick attendant in Greenwich Hospital, is prooving to be a handful to track down.  His father according to the marriage certificate was called Wiliam too and was a shoemaker in 1842 and presumably from Essex, since his son was born there, but I suppose I shouldn't count on it given my ggg grandfather William seems to have been a bit of a gypsy.

Suzanne,

I looked through all the baptisms I have for Bearmans in Bocking and there are only two Williams even close to 1812.  One is my ancestor, born in 1808 and the other is a son of James and Sarah, baptised in 1816.  Of course, if he came from a non-conformist family as many folk around here did, I wouldn't have him listed.  Do you think he was still living in Essex in 1841?  I could have a look at the census.

Regards,

Neve
