1861 Census Lookup
« on: Wednesday 07 February 07 23:44 GMT (UK) »
This is a bit of a long shot - but nothing ventured and all that.

An ancestor of mine was sentenced to manslaugher and transported to Australia I was hoping to find him on the 1861 Census at Portland Gaol.  I know the ship (Lincelles) he arrived in Perth, Australia on, left Portland on the 5th October 1861 (ie after the 1861 Census was recorded) and I am ASSUMING he would have been in the Portland gaol waiting his transportation.  The name of the person I am looking for is:

Wiliam Markham, born Grasby, Lincolnshire in October 1835.

Any help gratefully received.

Many  thanks

I think this may be him - but in the District Convict Prison Chatham  Kent.

RG9 piece 480 folio 164 page 17

W M   Convict  Unmarried 24  Agricultural Labourer  Lincoln Grassby.

There are 431 W M's locked up in various institutions in 61 and he is the only one I can see from Grasby/Grassby

Thanks VERY MUCH Fisherman for the obvious amount of trawling you must have done.

This is very intriguing to find him in Kent.  Presumably they just moved them around when ever they had space issues.  I can see this being a real mystery to try and understand between March 1859 when he was sentenced in York to Oct 1861 where was he locked up.

Thanks for your help.

Regards
