Where in Wales did gt gt grandpa come from?
« on: Thursday 08 February 07 19:57 GMT (UK) »
Below is an extract from the 1881 England census, it is the bottom entry I am interested in. My gt gt grandfather's place of birth was transcribed as Ranerhly, Wales. I thought that this was misheard by the enumerator and could be Llanelly but I hit a dead end. I wonder if  anyone has any other ideas? I'm not sure if the entry in the right hand column says 'Mon' as short for Monmouthshire. It is shown against the entry for Ebbw Vale and the one above for Pontypool and seems to have a ditto against the 'Ranerhly' entry. Any ideas please?  ???

Hi Roobarb

What is the person's name and have you found them on other censuses?

His name was David Price, pretty common in Wales unfortunately! I found him on the 1871 and 1891 censuses but his birthplace was just listed as Wales. He died before the 1901 census, there are a couple of possible entries for the 1861 census in Middlesbrough but I'm not sure whether he was there or still in Wales. He was born about 1834, I have his marriage certificate and his father's name was listed as Roger, a shoemaker. I haven't had any success in finding him either, the certificate doesn't say he was deceased but they don't always do they?

It probably is Llanelly, and it would be Monmouthshire. There is a Llanelly near Abergavenny, as well as the better known one down west (now spelt Llanelli).

     Gareth
Scott, Dowdeswell (Merthyr Tydfil), Jones (Loughor and Merthyr Vale), Roberts (Nelson), Prichard (Collenna and Cefn Fforest); Evan Roberts (Corwen and Amlwch); Scott (Pentre); Scott (Ancrum); Thomas (Pantywaun and Bedlinog); Morgan Jones (Ystradfellte); Bowen (Loughor); Jenkins (Bridgend); Thomas Dowdeswell (b. Gloucester, 1829).

I wonder if this is the family in 1841?

1841 census

HO107/743/23/27/15

Roger PRICE 40 shoem N
Frances 50 N
Fanny 20 iron weigher N
Henry 15 N
John 15 ***ler N
Benjamin 14 ditto N
David 11 labourer N
Charles 5 N

Address: Garnddyris, Blaenavon, Llanwenarth, Monmouthshire

Note that there are several Llanellis, including the one Gareth mentioned and another Llanellieu (I think!) in Breconshire.  The boundaries with Monmouthshire and Breconshire moved around a bit!

Are the witnesses to his eventual marriage any help?  Maybe siblings?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

All gets very confusing with the Llanellis!
The witnesses at his marriage were both from his wife's family so no indications there.
The 1841 entry looks very promising though Arranroots. David's only daughter was called Frances and his sons were George Henry (known as Henry), Charles and John, so all names that his mother and siblings had. David became a Puddler in the ironworks in Middlesbrough, that's possibly what the illegible occupation for John in 1841 is also. I think this may well be the correct entry, the name Roger was less common and particularly the occupation of shoemaker. Yipeee!  ;D

The Universal British Directory of Trade, Commerce and Manufactury gives the name as "Llanethly".

Hello roobarb
I have just discovered that David Price from"Ranerhly" is my great great grandfather and, while searching for the placename, came across your post. I am living in Canada, having moved here in 1964 from Middlesbrough. My father was Harold Charles Price, his father was Charles Henry Price, whose father was Charles Price, whose father was David Price.
