Alfred ad William Cleghorn - early 1900s
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 22:40 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about Alfred Antony Cleghorn who married a Nancy Joyce Bridge in (probably) Auckland. Their daughter Jane married the author Witi Ihimaera.

Also his brother William Ernest Cleghorn who married Stella Margaret Cook in 1937 in Auckland.

If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

Many thanks

Phil

Hi Phil,

I don't know if this is the right person or not but NZ Archives in Wellington has a military file for an Alfred Cleghorn who interestingly enough had an alias of Alfred Clayton!  Use the following info to order it from Archives.  It will cost you so you may want to enquire first.

title years
CLAYTON, Alfred - [a.k.a. CLEGHORN, Alfred] - WW1 4/538 - Army 1914 - 1918

agency series  accession box / item  record.
AABK    18805  W5530     73             0025729

And in NZ Archives in Auckland they have a probate for William Cleghorn

title                                                     years
CLEGHORN William Ernest - Auckland 1960 - 1960

agency series  box / item record
BBAE     1570   Box1545   2187/1960

As well as the probate for Stella

title                                     years
CLEGHORN Stella Margaret 1990 - 1990

agency series box / item   record
BAZZ    1570   Box4455     1742/1990

Nothing found for Nancy.

William and Stella were interred (as such) at Purewa Cemetery in Auckland

Many thanks to Bren and Bunny for your kindness and wonderful information.

I have also a Robert Sprott Cleghorn (married to Winifred Jill Senior) who was the brother of William and Alfred.

Their parents were William Cleghorn b 1875 England and died 1926, and Eleanor Cleghorn (nee Sprott) b 1884 and died 1955.

William and Stella had 3 sons but I know no names, and Alfred and Nancy had 2 daughters Jane and Sarah .

I wonder if you could find any information on these others please?

Many thanks again for your help - it is greatly appreciated.

Phil

So you are looking for modern rellys as well as the old crew?

Did William and Eleanor come to NZ, are they buried here?

Do you have them in England on census ?

You seem to have a fair amount of details, could you define exactly what your looking for.

Cleghorn is a fairly easy name to search here.

Newspaper death notices are a truely great option for NZ searchers and if you or someone popped into Auckland lib, and checked William and Stella notices, you would have all the relatives.
                                       :)

And from Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland...

Name  CLEGHORN, WILLIAM
Details M: died 22-04-1926: aged 51
Place Hillsborough
Location Area 1 Block A Lot No 618
Inscription reads "In loving memory of William beloved husband of Eleanor Cleghorn died 22 April 1926 aged 51 yrs."

Eleanor isn't there.  She has to be somewhere but at this point I'm not sure where.
