1871 1891 Charles Jervis
« on: Monday 12 February 07 11:53 GMT (UK) »
Charles Jervis b 1822 in Stafford appears in the 1841, 51, 61, 81 & 01 census in Stone as a shoemaker or cordwainer. He marries in Dec 1857 a  Mary Perkins who appears in the 1861 census. In 1881 he is a widower living with his brother in law in Stone and there is a neice of his brother in law, Eliza A Jervis aged 13, also living with him. In 1901 he is single and aged 79. He dies in 1912 aged 90.

In order to understand what happened to his wife and whether there were children I would like to find the missing census for this family.

1871 should give some clues and the 1891 census fill in the gap.

Appreciate any help.

Many thanks

Graham

Thanks. Thats really interesting. I thought that Eliza was Charles daughter but couldn't be sure. I think the 1891 census ties that up.

Charles is strange case. In 1861 and 1871 he is married, in 81 he is a widower, in 91 he is married and in 01 he is single. In only 61 and 71 does he have a wife living with him. he does seem to live with relatives a lot. In 61 its Mary in 71 its Sarah. I think he married Mary Perkin in 1857 in Stone.  As you say he changes his trade. Also there is another marriage in Stone of a Charles Jervis to either a Clara Gilbert or Ellen Glover in 1878. Charles is not common as a  Jervis name and until your 91 census thought that was his second marriage.

Sounds as if Sarah Bone was quite independent as a shopkeeper. I wonder how they met?

Many thanks again.

Best wishes
Graham
