1841 census look up please
« on: Monday 12 February 07 14:16 GMT (UK) »
I've had trouble locating this family with any certainty, so now the 1841 census is online, am having another go.

Emma Parsons was b. March 1838 in Barking Town.  Her father is down as James Parsons, Butcher and her mother is Emma Lee.

According to IGI James Parsons marries Emma Lee in 1829 in Stepney.  And possible son in born, also James, in 1829, Stepney.

Emma marries in 1861 in Southwark, and gives her father as James Parsons, gentleman.

Can anybody see a James and Emma Parsons with daughter Emma aged 3ish together in the 1841 Census?  The nearest I have got is a James and Amelia Parsons with a 7 year old daughter, Emma, but would like to ensure there are no other likely candidates.

Kind REgards

Hi KA,
I found this odd little family in 1841, Milton next Gravesend, Kent
HO107/460/11 f.15 p.22
Lucy Lee 60 Ind  N
Anna  "   20        N
Edwin Westwood 8   N
Emma Parsons   3     N (indexed as 8 but I think is a 3 compared to others on page)
Perhaps her grandmother, what do you think?

Barbara,

I like that very much. ;)  A very likely candidate.  Ties Emma Parsons in with a Lee family very nicely.  I wonder if mother died?

Makes me wonder where Emma will be in 1851 as now quite likely not to be with parents either!

Many thanks.

Hi KA

I don't think your 1841 Emma with James and Amelia can be correct.

I have just found them in 1851 - Emma now 15, two younger siblings, still in Barking- but dad is a Market Gardener.

Unless he changed jobs quite a bit and became a gentleman if he was given a large plot of land to garden on  8)

How about this family in 1851- maybe Emma went to grandma's if mum wasn't well in 1841.He seems rather young to be receiving a pension,so could bhe be the father on the marr cert described as gentleman?

In Bethnal Green at 3 Walverley? Street  HO 107/ 1539 folio 558 page 37

James Parsons Head mar 45 annuitant b Essex
Emma Parsons dau unm 14 scholar  b Essex

Ann Lepard neice mar 29 dressmaker b Kent
Mary Ann Lepard neice unm 3   b Middx
Jane Lepard neice unm 1 b Middx

Who were the witnesses to her 1861 marr- any clues there?

Regards

Carol

EDIT - great minds Barbara  ;)

Carol,

Witnesses at the marriage in 1861 were Richard and Matilda Govell.

Interestingly Emma Parsons marries a wine cooper.  So links with the victualling trade.  But I can't think why she has him as being a Butcher on her birth certificate!

However - I am wondering if the Ann Lepard age 29 from Kent on the 1851 census is the same Anna Lee age 20 on the 1841 census in Kent with Lucy Lee and 3 year old Emma.  What do you think?

Can anybody see Richard and MAtilda Govell, just in case it helps the case along?

Regards
