Second opinion needed please!
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 14:32 GMT (UK) »
I have been searching for the birth of Joseph Henry Corke.

I have his marriage certificate to Winifred Mabel Warren in Dec 1908 which gives his age as 28, profession 'clerk' and his father's name as Robert William Corke, a 'gateman'.

Even with that info I can't find his birth!

However, in 1901 I have found a family including a Robert Corke as the head (a laockgateman) and his son JAMES Corke (a clerk) - the right age to be my Joseph.

What does everyone think? Is this coincidence enough? Does anyone know is Joesphs were ever called James or do you think it's a mistake? Or am I on completely the wrong track altogether!

I'd appreciate any thoughs on it!

Thanks.

I wonder if the enumerator originally wrote Joseph abbreviated "Jos" and then misread it as "Jas" = James when he wrote his notes into the book?

Have you located any other births that might match this family? Maybe Joseph is away from home in 1901?  Is the family you found in the right area?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi both   :)

I was hoping for something similar but I fear he's called James in 1891 as well  :-\  :-\ RG12/382 18 30

I don't suppose Joseph marries from the 1901 address?  :P

Unfortunately he doesn't marry from that address, he marries from 170 Spa Road but I can't read whereabouts that is!

I haven't located any of the other births purely because I'm not sure if it's the right famly. The only info I have is what is on the marriage cert and then the birth cert of their son so I'm trying to work backwards. They seem to be based around the Surrey area.

Is anyone able to find the birth of a Joseph Henry Corke for around 1880? Or even that particular family in 1881?

Thanks for your help you two!

Hi Rachel,

I've found a Joseph Henry Corke birth registered in Dec 1879 but in Stow on  the Wold; which is a long way from Surrey!

It's always a possibility though isn't it? How would I go about finding his fathers name? Thanks!

Hi Rachel,

You could look for Joseph on 1881 census, look for a baptism or jump in and buy a copy of the birth cert.   If you are certain of the name of his father you could use that as a check and if it does not match then you get a refund of £4.

Good luck,

Oh god I'm getting myself all confused - I can't find that Joseph Corke on the census either, and now I also can't find the birth of James Corke!

My ancestry subscription ran out last month and I can't afford to renew it at the moment - it's driving me up the wall not being able to have access to all the census' though!  ;D
