Where do I begin?
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 17:02 GMT (UK) »
 ???
I'm very new to researching family tree and i've no living family to help with dates and names.
My grandmother surname was Graham born in London I think and I think it could be in the late 1890's when she was born Christian name was Alice.
Can anybody give me any clues as to where to start the family thought that she was connected to the Selfridge Family of the store fame but we're not sure.

Welcome Maverick.

Best to work backwards - do you have your parents marriage details ?

If you have a Marriage Cert for your parents, we can take their Father's names and work back .... to the 1901 census

Was Alice Graham maternal / paternal Grandmother ?

There are 17 Alices born 1880 -1900 in the London area in 1901, so we need to be able to ID her with a father, or a DoB or a PoB ...

Hi Maverick
Welcome to Rootschat :D
As Newfy says you need to start with what you already know and work back from there. Unfortunately Alice Graham is quite a common name and being born in London doesn't help - in 1901 there are quite few possibles. So starting with your parents marriage is the way to go. If you post everything you know we will do our best to put you on the right track.

Hi Maverick !  I'll add my own Welcome to all the others  :D

If you need to obtain your parents marriage certificate, and they married in England or Wales you can search the Index online here, for free

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

Make a note of the place of registration, the volume & page number.  Then for £7 you can apply for a copy!

Good Luck

Ah, on that new thread you are looking for who I assume is Alice's mother ... so you don't want to pursue Alice ?

From the other thread, Lydia and Alfred Graham were in Sheffield in 1901, no daughter Alice as of then ...
