Hi All,
Given the number of people that have Percy Place on their birth cert, I decided to conduct a search of hundreds of newspapers, city directories, birth & death records, and so on, and was able to find the following:
1932: St Brendan's Nursing Home appears to commence business at 33 Percy Place.
1934: New law requiring all Maternity Homes to register with the local authority.
1937: K. Dalton registers St Brendan's with the local authority.
1944: St Brendan's (and Nurse K. Dalton) move to 39 Percy Place.
1945: The Cassidy family appear to take over 33 Percy Place and it's then called St Anthony's. In addition to pregnant mothers, St Anthony's care for elderly patients and provide end of life care. I think they remained here until about 1962.
I believe that St Brendan's (at 39 Percy Place) closed sometime between 1958 and 1964.
I have found that Nurse K. Dalton continued to register births/deaths for 33 Percy Place, after moving to No. 39, so there was a working relationship between the two.
John Arthur Graham, a Solicitor's Managing Clerk lived at 39 Percy Place until his death in 1934. I've found no link between him and St Brendan's yet and it's worth noting that St Brendan's doesn't move into this property until ten years after his death, so it looks like he had nothing to do with St Brendan's Nursing Home.
To summarise: Anyone born between 1932-1944 probably have 33 Percy Place on their birth certs and those born mid-1944 onwards probably have 39 Percy Place on the birth certs.
Hope this timeline helps some of you.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has Percy Place on a birth certificate. Please feel free to send me a message via this site.
Also FYI: I have come across multiple cases of illegally falsified birth certs for babies linked to St Brendan's.
All the best,
Glen
