JOHN WILLIAMS HUGHES - LLANGEFNI - 1861 LOOKUP REQUEST
« on: Tuesday 23 November 04 10:20 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather, John Williams Hughes, was born in Llangefni in 1851/52.  I wonder if anyone has access to an 1861 Anglesey Census and can locate him and his family for me.  With thanks, Emma

Hi Dizzy,

you're looking at a whole county with Anglesey. Do you have any further information, i.e. from the 1871/81/91 census - where he is living then, names of other family members etc. Have you birth/marriage/death cert for him, which might identify him?

As you might have guessed, "John Hughes" and is cousin "John Williams" got around a fair bit in Wales in those days.

Let us know anything else you might have on him, and we'll see what we can do.

Thanks.  Unfortunately he was living in Broughton-in-Salford, Lancs., by 1871 (aged 19) and was still there at the age of 29 (married with children by then).  All I know is that he lists Llangefni as his birthplace and that my father has a book (presumably of his), undated, inscribed 'Mona Drug Hall, Llangefni'.  The paternal side of his family are all from further south - Montgomery area - and this is the only indication we have that his mother's side might have had Anglesey origins.  Many thanks for your interest, Emma Disley

Hi again,

you don't say whether you know his parents names.

But anyway I would send an inquiry to the national library of Wales in Aberystwyth

http://www.llgc.org.uk/

Ymholiadau/Enquiries:   holi@llgc.org.uk

Tell them what you already know and ask for a look in the 61 census.

Llangefni do have the 61 census (and are most helpful), but the 61 is not indexed, so would entail a search fee. The LLGC will look up for free. The results do take a couple of days though, so you'll have to be patient.

For any other enquiries regarding Anglesey,
archives@anglesey.gov.uk

Alternatively, as Angelsey used to be part of Gwynedd before the re-re-restructuring of the counties, you could try:
Gwynedd Archives:
 AngharadMairJones@gwynedd.gov.uk

Good luck.

Thank you very much for this advice.  No, I don't at this stage know anything about his parents and therefore wonder whether what I have is precise enough to ask the library to undertake a search.  All I know is that he would have been a boy in Llangefni (possibly) aged 9, called John Williams Hughes.   But I'll have a go.  Thanks again.  Best wishes, Emma

My goodness - this is it!  My father has an undated book given to or belonging to - '?? Hughes, Mona Drug Hall, Llangefni'.  That Robert is a chemist & druggist ties in with his son's line of work in Salford ten years later, the nineteen year old being also described as a 'chemist and druggist'.  Many thanks indeed.  I'd been stuck on this line for ages and am very, very grateful.  Best wishes, Emma
