Uniform.. British or American?

Hello... can you help us out.  This photo was amongst my nannas photographs and he is a bit of a mystery.

Were unsure of the uniform.  I think it looks american and my family think its British.

WE dont know who it is but we have been told that our father belived it could of been the father he never knew.

So.. its all very intresting to us and were desperate to find out What uniform it is.

British. Royal Artillery, Officer- possibly a captain. Thats what it looks like to me.

Doesn't look like an American uniform to me ... the hat and the insignias. 

I would agree with Old Rowley that it is British.
