Sorry for the late reply. I thought I had posted a reply to this one.

I think you could be right about Edward and Mary and wondered if the reference to Sarah J was possibly a mishearing and a misrecording of Mary J.

Can you check some of the other (later?) censuses please to see how the wife is recorded?

If it is a different wife then I can only assume she died prior to 1878 and that Edward re-married. Are there any records to prove this please?

Hi rcuser,
I'm afraid you have to go bit by bit with this one !
Edward jnr has been a coal lab, butcher and wagon builder ? so I am a bit wary without confirmation of a certificate
Obtain the cert and it will cut down on mistakes
