Can You Read This
« on: Friday 16 February 07 21:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I have just been transcribing a burial entry for a member from microfiche. I have sat here with my trusty magnifying glass and I still can't work it out so have tried something. I don't know how this will come out on the board but will give it a try. I have photographed the entry while it is in the reader.

The Entry is from the parish of St Columb Minor in Cornwall

Lewis John May
25 Years Churchwarden (at/of) ?

I can't for the life of me work out what it says.

Could it be "St. Mary's"?

Thanks for trying Jill. There is a Truro St Mary in Cornwall but I don't think it says that. Initially I wondered if a person would be likely to live most of his life in St Columb Minor yet be a Churchwarden in another parish. I wouldn't have thought so but I really don't know. It doesn't look like St something to me but I just can't for the life of me work out what it says. Hopefully requester may know if he was a Churchwarden elsewhere. Usually these entries I have noticed for Churchwardens say "Churchwarden of this Parish"

Ive  had a thought with Jill's St Mary's in mind and something came to me that didn't before. What if that after Churchwarden is st (little s) It still does not say Col Minor bit could the C have gone a bit astray looking like S and it says Col Major" There is certainly a looping letter in the word g,j,y. The more I look at it I do think that does say st and not at after Churchwarden.

Thanks Gadget,

There is a St Agnes also. To me that first part of what follows at/st does not look like ST, but I have the reader to look at and not the terrible photo I have subjected on you. Jill where did you see the st to be? I could almost see that the beginning of the word after at/st could be M now when looking it in comparison to May. I actually had missed the entry when I was looking for it until the member could give me the year to look.

Ever since I started looking at it (hours ago) I took it to be [at S.........]  but now I am not so sure. Perhaps the poster will be able to tell us if he has any knowledge of him being a Churchwarden. I actually suspected they may have been Bible Christians as I could find no baptisms listed and Lewis's youngest sibling was baptised Bible Christian as was Lewis's wife. If that was the case he certainly returned to the established church having been a Churchwarden somewhere for 25 years  ::)

I will try another photo - this time I will photograph the whole screen and then crop it out. Camera takes big pics! I reduced the last one by half to post thinking big would make it easier but maybe in this case bigger is not better. I have never tried photographing the microfiche screen before. Off to try again....Kris   ;)
