Look up please Tillman
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 07:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

Not sure if I am suppose to be here or in the Middlesex section, but bear with me ::)

Annie Tillman married William Edward Lee in 1907 in Teddington Middlesex, and she was 21 at her marriage. I have looked through the 1886 births for her and nothing. So I went the last 2 quarters of 1885 and first quarters of 1887 for her, and nothing. Word has it in the family, that either her uncle or father 'Tillman' came from Hastings, plus Annie was known as Elizabeth Annie Tillman.

On the marriage cert, her father is mentioned as James Tillman, and that Rose Tillman was witness at the wedding.

Any help would be most gratefully accepted ;D

Hi Nai,
I thought it would be a good idea to look for the family on the 1901 & 1891 census but I really wasn't that lucky  :(
I only found this in 1901;  RG13/710/10/12  Ash, Kent

Jane LLoyd  Head  wid  63  Laundress  b. Sevenoaks, Kent
ANNIE TILLMAN  niece    15                                 ditto
Alfred Lloyd      nephew  12                   b. London

There are Tillman's in Hastings but no James,

Merely following your lead Jane

The other Otley Tillman is George.

1891 census RG12 672 folio 64
Otford Street Otford  Kent
Thomas Cheeseman 60 Otford, Kent,  Head  Married Labourer
Eliza Cheeseman 60 Ide Hill, Kent, Wife  Married
William Cheeseman 17 Otford, Kent,  Son  Labourer
George Tillman  11 Otford, Kent,  Grandson

still with his grandparents in 1881.

What occupation was Annie Tillman's father James on her marriage?

Hi Valda,

Her father was a labourer on the marriage cert. And there is a Rose Tillman who witnessed it.

I did come across the 1891 and 1901 census you both mentioned, which is confusing me some what!!! Looks like there may be abit of a mystery here!!!

Nai

though not necessarily your mystery since the Annie concerned was Annie Harriet.

Her Tillman connection was directly through her aunt.

RG9 2086 folio 35
Great Witley Court Great Witley  Worcestershire
Jane Tillman  25  Ightham, Kent,  Servant  Unmarried Laundry maid

As far as I can see Jane Ann had a younger brother called George and then some half siblings. No James, Sussex or Roses apparent.

What full name is given for your Annie on any of her children's birth certificates? Have you found her death? What is her age and name on death?

Hi Valda,

On my grandmother's birth cert it reads:

Born 18 Mar 1908 Margaret Annie Georgina
Father William Edward Lee  21yrs old
Mother Annie Lee (nee Tillman) 21 yrs old

And they were living at 9 Springfield Road Teddington.

Not looked into her death yet!!!

Ok we have a Annie Harriet birth, but what the family say, she was known as Elizabeth Annie. This is what is throwing me at the mo.

Thanks for all your help Valda

Annie's age would be on her marriage certificate, not her daughter's birth certificate which would only give her name and maiden name (can you confirm that was purely 'Annie Tillman' on the certificate)?
Marriage certificates are notorious for fabrications on the part of people who married e.g. ages massaged up and down, not marrying in full names, father's occupations massaged up, father's names invented to disguise illegitimacy, addresses of convenience .....
