Hello Michelle

I'm no expert on military records, I'm afraid, so I can't give any specific advice, particularly about the Boer War records, except to say that they will almost certainly be held at The National Archives (Kew); if you can get there you can search them to your heart's content without charge.

WW1 records are held at Kew and as far as I'm aware are not online anywhere. The changes of find anything are relatively slim anyway, since many were lost to bombing in WW2 (unless he was an officer).

You can read all about military records at TNA here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=23
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=18

There are almost certainly other leaflets that are relevant too, you can browse the list here:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp

As to deaths, what sites have you searched, was it FreeBMD(http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/)? This is work in progress and is far from complete - there's very little after about 1915. If you go the Ancestry:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx you need to search the index images in the section Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983 - you will get an image of the relevant page of the index to check - that is complete except where Ancestry have misindexed it, there were several posts on this subject here last week.

I hope all that is of some help,

Good luck

Colin

Wow Colin,

Thanks so much for all that information and the links. It'll certainly give me something to get my teeth into.

I've posted a letter on the Military bit. Incidentally my g-grandad was a Sergeant, in the 1/4 York Lancaster Regt. I've got something with Hallamshire Rifles on that belonged to him and also about 5 photos.

Thanks again Colin

Michelle ;)

Blimey :o

 Hi Claire

I can't believe it. It looks like you've found Giovanni and Sophia's first born child - Caroline.
You've also discovered yet another way to spell our family name. I can now apply for her birth certificate.
I'm hoping that there may be a marriage  certificate for them too.
Sadly Caroline never got married she died aged 35, the second surviving child, Teresa, died aged 21. Angelo is indeed their son he went on to produce 3 or 4 girls. Then there was Austin my g-g-grandfather. Whilst I've discovered Angelo George's birth under the spelling of BENEY, I've not found Austin's birth registered anywhere.
Where did you find Caroline's birth registered, I'd looked under FreeBMD, but not under that spelling?
I never thought researching family ancestry could be so exciting. Do you think I should get out more? LOL

Thanks again.

I've only been using this site since yesterday and people are so nice.

I definitely appreciate any help I can get.

Cheers Claire,

After 1862 they seem to get the spelling correct more often...
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com so you may want to check again as there are
many births and deaths listed for Ecclesall and Sheffield......I'm sure you have this one already, ...
Marriage:June Quarter 1873
Austin Bini  Nottingham vol 7b pge 521

Deaths Sept. Q. 1873
Caroline Bini 35  Sheffield  vol. 9c pge. 211

Thanks JJ

That's really helpful too. I'm learning so much.

I've just checked out the beautiful websites in honour of your family members.

Thanks again
