Anyone live in Midleton?

One of my relations was born in Thomas Street in Midleton in 1875.

What I'd like to know is - does Thomas St still exist? And if so, what is the name and address of the nearest RC church...(Not a new one, obviously!)

I dont live in Midleton but if you go on Google Maps, Thomas Street can be clearly seen off of Main Street. I am sure you will find the local Catholic Church in fact just South of Thomas Street is Church Lane. Good Luck!

When I first tried Google Maps I'm fairly sure that only Dublin and Cork City was available to view. Good to see that there's more coverage now.

All I need now is the name - perhaps someone reading this will come to the rescue...

Thomas Street certainly does still exist and the Catholic Church is: Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in St. Mary's Road. However, in 1875 the Rosary had not been built, there was a chapel right on the edge of town called St. John - the records for St. John's `are in the sacristy.
They should be available from Mallow Heritage Centre but I have no idea how accurate they are.  If you want more specific information I'll be happy to try and help you.

When you say the records for St. John's `are in the sacristy, do you mean in the new church?

Since my original posting I've found out that although the first son was christened as a RC, the following son was christened as CofI !  I know that their mother was protestant, and I'm now assuming the father was RC and the children were a mix - perhaps to satisfy both parents! This being so, would you know of any CofI churches near Thomas St in 1875?

Yes, the books  are kept in The Holy Rosary.

The next turning along from Thomas Street (my grandmother lived there) is Church Lane - St. John the Baptist, built by the Brodericks (Lord Midleton). I have never seen anyone in there and the only contact I can suggest is: http://www.cork.anglican.org/help/researchingfamilyhistory.html. If you use Google Earth you can see it quite clearly.

I can have a look at the headstones if you think that may be of interest and, although it's a bit early, I can try the Parish Census for you of 1842.

I wanted the info because I aim one day to come and have a look myself - and be well prepared!

The Myles family lived in Midleton certainly between 1874 and Dec 1875 for that is when and where two of the sons were born. But I think that they moved to Cork City at some point after. I'm not aware of anyone dying there. I have the army papers of the first son John Myles who gave as his next of kin his mother Maria, whose address was Buckingham Place, Cork City, in 1898. Her husband's name was also John.

So I don't think there'll be any gravestones of the Myles' there but thank you for your kind offer and for the picture of the church too.

A John Myles was born in the Midleton Area and had two brothers (William and George) and moved to Cork City. John was born around 1871 and like his brother William en-listed into the army both into the 2nd. Batt. Royal Dublin Fuss. They faught in the Boar wars a John was Discharged in the ealry 1900s following his enlisted period. He Got married around 1895 two years before he enlisted and had two children. John re-joined the army in 1914 and was killed in action in 1916.

You seem to know a lot about my rellies! I know that my two great uncles were born in Middleton ( John & William) and that both served in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. From memory, John served about eight years, serving in the Boer War, and later in Egypt, and Malta I think before discharge in 1906. His brother William served only for about 18 months before being medically dishcharged, about six months of which was in SA. Their brother George was in the Royal Horse Artillery, but that's all I know of him, I don't know when or where he was born.

But I had no idea that John also served in WW1 and was killed in action. I have a photo of him somewhere dressed in his best uniform. I didn't know he was married either, although I think I've found his brother William on the 1911 census living in Dublin.

Are you a relation of this family? And did you know that the boys had a sister called Annette?
