Eugene Murphy Ireland to Illinois
« on: Wednesday 21 February 07 23:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi my name is Gerard Murphy I live in Ireland. Looking for any info on my grand uncle Eugene Murphy b1889 who left Cullen, Millstreet, Co.Cork to goto Monticello, Illinois in 1913 from the ship record. He also had a brother James who went to Illinois do not know if they went together or kept in contact. Eugene and James never made contact with there family in Ireland again would like to know what happened to them. I found the below records on-line below and think this may be Eugene. I cannot be sure I would appreciated any help in solving this family mystery.

Eugene Murphy
Birth Date: 22/03/1889
Death Date; August 1963
Social Security Number: 342-24-9516
State of Residence and Death: Illinois.

His parents should be Michael Murphy and Mary O Connell of Gountane,
Cullen, Millstreet, Co.Cork. Ireland.

and also the following

World War One civilian draft registrations
Monticello,Piatt County,IL
Eugene Patrick Murphy
b. Cork,Ireland 21 Mar 1889
single
works for Edward Phelan in Monticello
Tall,slender build,light blue eyes,brown hair
taken 5 Jun 1917

Cannot be sure its him but the records here would all add up with dates places etc. Would love to know did he marry, have a family.

Found this:

Arriving Mar 15, 1913 on the "Baltic" from Queenstown to NY
Murphy, Eugene, 24, male, singel, farmer, can read, write,  Brit-
                   ish citizen, nationality-Irish, Country-Ireland, Mill-
street, contact: father Michael Cullen, Millstreet, Co.
Cork, going to Illinois, Monticello, doesn't have a
ticket to final destination, ticket paid by self, $150 in
hand, never in US before, going to join friend, David
Breen, Monticello, Piatt County, Illinois, never in
prison, not a polygamist, not an anarchist, health-
                   good, 6' tall, fair complexion, hair-fair, eyes-blue,
                   from Ireland, Millstreet

Gerald, I haven't been able to find him in either the 1920 or 30 census.  He doesn't appear in Piatt Co. and chances are he moved on to the Chicago area.  What was the occupation of his father?  Are there any unusual names that tend to run in the family?  i.e I found a Patrick Murphy with a daughter, Nova.  He isn't going by Eugene and there are many, many Patrick Murphys.  Then if the transcriber messed up the spelling of the last name, odds of finding him are even less.  One option would be to send for the death certificate of the one you think might be him.  That would possibly give his wife's name, if she was still living, or it might have the name of a child, if he/she provided the death certificate information.  Sorry I couldn't find more.---Genealiza

Eugene Murphy father was a Farmer maybe down as a Labourer also.

It would appear that he moved to Cook Couty by 1930.

There is two Eugene Murphy in Cook County b1889 one of them born in New York so thats him eliminated the other I could not find out anyting about him so dont know if its him.

No James was recorded in Piatt County so think James may have gone to Cook County when he went over first.

At the moment all my info is what i have in the records above and you gave me more so i grateful for that.

Eugene brother and sisters had the following names

Bridget, James, Nora, Philip, Molly, Gerry, Michael, Dan
James is the only one who went to america as well.
Gerry(Jeremiah) was killed in WW1 he was in the British Army

His grand parents first names were
Michael,Bridget,Nora and Unknown.

Thats all the family names I have

                        spks Eng, no occup
Margret, wife, female, white, 27, marr, immig 1914,

immig 1911, PA(pers filed), can read, write, b.
Ire, Ire, Ire, spks Eng, no occup

Gerald, there is a Lawrence Keefe in Champaign Co., Illinois at this time, 1920,  with a large family.  He was born in Illinois, but his parents were born in Ireland.  It is possible that he is a relative of Margret and that she and Eugene moved back to work with them, since it appears they were all unemployed.   There should be a reason they settled on Champaign County as a place to live.---Genealiza

One thing as well in the 1930 census it has Eugene as Immg in 1915 this is simply a mistake i would guess

Yes, the 1915 could just be a mistake.  Someone else may have given the information and not known exactly when he immigrated.  This is definitely the same family as the 1920 Pueblo, Colorado family.
