« on: Thursday 22 February 07 16:48 GMT (UK) »
Nathan Benstead Born 1831 Ely Cambs.
Resident in Middlesbrough 1861 and 1871.
Died 1909 Saffron Walden.
Not Nathan P Benstead (Lythe Whitby)

I cannot trace him in 1881 or 1891.

Any ideas ?

Hello and a very warm welcome to Rootschat.  ;D

I can't see Nathan in 1881 but did find this burial entry.

20 October 1873
Mary Ann Benstead age 37
New Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough

Hope this helps.

Pauline and Sheila

Thank you both very much for two pieces of information I didn't know. Can you both tell me how you found this info(I'm still learning).

Pauline those are definately his kids, two others were married at this point and the youngest daughter Emily (my Gt Grandmother) was living with one of them.

Sheila I didn't know the date of Mary Anns death or where she was buried.

I'm grateful, thanks

Hi

Census entries from 1841/1901 can be seen at www.Ancestry.co.uk which is a paysite and is somewhat expensive.  If you are looking for census entries just post a request on the appropriate county board and I'm sure that a Rootschat member will be only too happy to find the info for you.

www.FreeBMD and www.UKBMD are free sites which give info on births, marriages and deaths.  Although not complete they have some very useful information.

The full birth, marriage and death indexes can be viewed at www.Ancestry.co.uk completely free.

www.FamilySearch.org contains information extracted from parish records along with member submitted info.

www.FamilyHistoryOnline is a paysite which gives info on births, marriages, deaths, burials etc., again this is not complete.

Many Rootschat members hold copies of parish records and again would be only too happy to look for information for you.  This is a very friendly site and people are always willing to help.

I'm sure others will be able to add to this but hope this helps a little.

Best regards ... Sheila

Sheila thanks very much I've been made to feel welcome already .

I have taken a subscription to Ancestry.com but clearly have much to learn.

Thanks again

So this is what I know
1. Nathan born 1831 Ely
2. His first wife and mother of the children died 1873
3. 1881 his youngest child is living with her oldest sister
4. His three middle daughters are in the workhouse.
5. The last entry for Nathan before 1901 is his second marriage in 1874
6. 1901 Nathan is in the workhouse back in his native Ely.

What could the possibilities be for his non apperance in any records ?

It would be unusual to be missing from 2 consecutive census, although not impossible  It is more likely that his name has been badly mistranscribed.

What was his second wife's name?  It may be worth searching for her.

He married Ann Martin in 1874.

I think she died in 1885.
