help with surname on birth cert
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 20:22 GMT (UK) »
I am struggling to see what the mothers maiden name was on the birth cert attached.  She was Irish.  Also if anyone can read the address.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this.

Thanks very much.

Do you know where I would find out her marriage to Joseph (McMillan / McMullen).  The one I found on family search says FERIS in 1845, not sure if this is the right one.

Hello Angela, I can see how Feris and Fairess could become muddled, I'd say it's a surname that could easily become distorted in translation and spelling. Having said that there cannot be too many Fairess-McMullen marriages :-\

Do you know roughly when their first child was born? is 1845 about the right date for the marriage and is the registration district in the right area?  If the answer is yes then you probably have the right couple.

Thanks Suey

Their first child was born in 1849 but in South Shields, Durham, England.  So unforunately that doesn't help.  I only know they were both born in Ireland.  Would you know if there is a BMD website for marriage cert in Ireland.

Thanks

The second to last letter is definitely an "f".
Compare it with the f in "formerly" and in "twenty first". This would make the name Fairifs, or Fairefs. I would certainly watch out for spelling variations on this one.
