Allsopps Down in Broughton
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 21:49 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if Allsopp's Down, Broughton still exists. William Allsop was a 'farmer of 529 acres' in 1871 assume it was rented. Who was there in 1861? There was a no1 & 2 listed as if it was just two cottages? Was he a farm bailiff then? Curious to know how or why the dwelling appears to have his surname.

Thanks Anne for your fantastic information. So it looks as tho' Allsops Down was named before my Allsop moved there. This raises the question of who then was the place named after? Are you able to tell me who was there in 1851 & 41? Our Allsop family supposedly came to Wellow in 1826 with the Nightingales. One son was at Houghton Mill in 1862 but all other family members appear to be accounted for in Wellow. So if anyone knows anything about Allsops of Broughton it could open up a whole new branch for me & I think I'd be pleased!
Thanks again Anne for your time, much appreciated.

Hi
I checked Broughton on the 1851 and browsed the village and Allsops Down was not named then. the closest I could find was Tompkins Down, and again there were 2 seperate Households, so i think it may have been the same place. The whole village in 1851 seemed to be associated with TOMPKINS, a Coach House etc. but why I don't know.
if you like I can go back and see what else I can find, but I don't think there were Allsops in the village in 1851 but i'll check

Thanks Anne you're a star. So it would appear an Allsop was there between 1851 & 61 but I suppose I'm unlikely to find out who. I think perhaps my only option from this distance is to scroll BMD on ancestry for Allsops in Broughton between those dates & hope something jumps out at me! Thanks again. Kay
