Double Registration
« on: Friday 23 February 07 11:02 GMT (UK) »
I have a birth in my family that is registered (a) in the maiden name of the mother and (b) in the married name of the mother - both entries have the same year/quarter/volume and page number.
I believe that the child was born before the marriage (which took place in the same quarter as the birth) Apart from buying three certificates how can I explain this?

Hi Johnl

Was the marriage after 1926?  An Act of Parliament (enacted in 1927) made it possible to legitimise a child born before the marriage of its parents.  If it was after this date, that might be an explanation.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hello Arranroots,

The registrations were made in the last quarter of 1899.

Hi JohnL, like Arranroots, I've seen similar, but after 1930 in my case.

Tati and I worked on one which had a handwritten notation on one of the entries, which cross-referenced the other one, or maybe even a 3rd one .... cant quite remember full details

Have you looked at the actual Index Page or just the Index entry (FreeBMD) ?

Hi all  :D

I remember that one too, Newfy  :D

In this case, given that it's the very same reference, perhaps someone could tell if it was possible (like I've found on some marriages) that the child was registered as surname XY or surname YZ on the same cert?  ???

Hello Newfy,

The child was registered George Edmund Dickerson in Poole (5a -248) in the last quarter 1899. The same child appears in it's father name as George Edmund Minty, same registration office etc.

No notes on the Dickerson page ...

nor on the Minty page ...

EXCEPT its GEORGE EDWIN, not Edmund - BOTH CASES

Hmmmn - cant remember how many entries per page for Births, but either you're looking at a coincidence or a mistran of the Edmund name ... I dont know how long it would have taken to 'fill up' Page 248, but I'd assume they were registered close together in time ...

I suspect however that he was registered first in mum's name, then in the Minty name and either Poole or the GRO didnt do the necessary Admin ... or even realise it was the same individual ?

I think you need to get the Certs, but make the order conditional on parents names ?
