Adoption mystery
« on: Friday 23 February 07 18:12 GMT (UK) »
I have hit a major snag in tracing my gt gt grandmother's (Margaret Wright) line.

On her marriage certificate it gives her mother's name as Isabella Bell .... on her death certificate it says Mary Anne Wright nee Chambers.

Her father is given as Walter Wright in both cases.  This is not a second marriage as Walter was married to Mary Anne at the time of my gt gt grandmother's birth and was still married to her at the time of his death.

She was born in 1849 and yet I cannot find her living with the family on the 1851 census of Jedburgh...surely where you would expect a 2 year old child to be living? neither can I find her with the family on the 1861 census  :-\

However !! .... on the 1851 census and living in the same building as the Wright family (presumably flats?) is a family called Bell........one of them a 2 year old Margaret Bell.

Margarets daughter claimed that her mother had 6 older sisters, as far as we can tell Walter and Mary Anne did not have 7 daughters, the Bell family however seems to have been very large indeed.

Is it possible that Margaret Bell was adopted by my gt gt grandparents?  or is it that Walter was indeed her biological father (if not' why name her biological mother and not father on her marriage certificate?) and brought the child up with his wife to save face?

This has my whole family scrathching their heads ......... anyone have any ideas?

Hello Thisty

I had a look at the 1851 Scotland index, and it's showing a 29 year old Walter Wright with Mary Ann Wright aged 36, as well as a James Wright aged 5 and a Margaret Bell aged 11. all in Jedburgh.

Is this the family?

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,  Is this definitely the 1851, not 1861?  The only reason I ask is the 10yr age gap.  I was going to look the 1841 but don't want to do that if it was a typo...not that I'm suggesting you should do one of those of course  ;)

Hi Debbie

It's the 1851 (don't have access to the census images).  There is a 2 year old Margaret Bell listed with the Bell family on the same page.

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul...oh, Sorry...Hi Thisty!!

Yes, I checked the 1841 & found  'a' margaret Bell with an Isabell Bell on the 1841, but as you say, there's no image on Ancestry to look at.  Maybe someone with access to Scotlands people might be able to take a peek.

Still, it hasn't quite answered your first question Thisty, but may have taken you a step closer  :)

I wonder what Margaret Bell's age was at marriage?    And at death?

Yes Paul that is the correst family.  Both them and the Bell family are living at 29 Canongate Jedburgh.

The Isabella Bell living there is far too young to be the mother named on Margarets marriage certifiacte so I'm still confused by it all.

What about the Isabella Bell debbie found in 1841?

And do you have the same date of birth for the death cert and marriage cert?
