Marriage Lookup - Brechin 1827
« on: Friday 23 February 07 18:38 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone able to lookup church records for Brechin in 1827 - are there any? I'm looking for the marriage of John Craig & Elizabeth Sturrock (IGI dates it as 22 Dec 1827) .  I'm really hoping for more information on John Craig's age/parents etc - so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Steve

You can download an image of the original church record at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

This looks like John and Elizabeth's 1851 Census entry below, which will give you an indication of John's age and place of birth. For parents' names, you could look at his death cert. which should include their names if known to the informant. The OPR entry showing on IGI is an actual extract. On line images of the OPRs have just come on line at Scotlands People. They can be very limited in terms of info - no more than you are seeing on the IGI entry in many cases. You won't know what's on it until you have a look. In your position, I would probably start with John's DC.

The likely family's entry in 1851:

John Craig    44, mechanic, b. Brechin
Elisabeth Craig 46, Carmylie
David Craig    19, b. Brechin
William Craig    17 b. Arbroath
Margaret Craig    16 b. Dundee
Peter Craig    14 b. Montrose
George Craig    13 b. Aberdeen
Alexader Craig    10 b. Brechin
Mary Craig    6 b. Brechin

Address: Park St Couper's Land, Arbroath

Regards.

Monica

This looks like John and family with a couple of mistranscriptions on the index in 1861. Given John lived past the start of official registration in Scotland - 1855 - you will hopefully be able to find his DC on Scotlands People:

John Raig    53, Mill Flax Mechanic, b. Brechin
Elizabeth Raig    34 (probably age on original 54?), b. Carmylie
William Craig    24, b Arbroath
Mary Craig    16 b. Brechin

Address: 2 Bank St, Arbroath

From IGI, there are at least two John Craigs showing as born in Brechin in 1806, both actual extracts. Whether either of these are your John is hard to guess, none of the parents' names are reflected in John and Elizabeth's children's name (although there could have been some early deaths)....John's DC looks to be the best form of verication of his parents.

Regards.

Monica

Thanks to you both for their quick replies and info, I'll certainly take a look at ScotlandsPeople.
