Help in finding...................John Nolen (nolan?)
« on: Monday 26 February 07 20:03 GMT (UK) »
This has been one of my biggest headaches so far in researching

Emily Nolan 19 Mar 1884 born in Shepherds bush, London. Married George Cooke on 5th Jun 1904

Had a son Harold (my grandfather) on 27th Nov 1905

She died on 19 Sept 1941

I have not looked up any references to these facts as they have come from my cousin.

Our problem has been that Emily's father was called John Nolen (Nolan?) not sure on spelling and came from Ireland.

And thats it, I really dont know where to start looking with little to no information on him. Possible he was born in 1835 but not confirmed.  Might have married to Maria North?  The date 11 Nov 1859 has been suggested but again cant be comfirmed.

Please where do I start.

Tracy

HI,
IT'S RON LALLEY AGAIN, JUST STUMBLED ON THE ROOTS CHAT SITE YESTERDAY. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE NOLANS & NORTH FOR SEVERAL YEARS, MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS MARIA & JOHNS SON THOMAS PATRICK NOLAN BORN 6 JAN 1871.  I ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT EMILY NOLAN ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THE ADDRESS WHERE THEY LIVING IN 1891 HAS BEEN LOST FROM THE CENSUS BUT I RECENTLY FOUND THE FAMILY ON THE 1901 CENSUS, MARIA WAS SHOWN AS A WIDOW, I AM NOT CERTAIN WHEN JOHN DIED. YOU CAN CONTACT ME BY E-MAIL (*). I HAVE TRIED FOR MANY YEARS TO FIND WHICH AREA OF IRELAND THE NOLAN'S ARE FROM BUT SO FAR NO LUCK. IT'S NICE TO HAVE SOME MORE INFO ABOUT THE MARIA & JOHNS CHILDREN, I HAD A NOTE THAT EMILY MARRIED A COOKE BUT COULD NOT CONFIME THIS UNTIL TODAY.

REGARDS
RON LALLEY

Emily's birth certificate should list the names of both her parents and with those details you can start searching for their marriage.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

In Ireland I've only ever come across Nolan, might be worth checking for variations though.

"Irish (Leinster and Munster): Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Nualláin ‘descendant of Nuallán’, a personal name representing a diminutive of nuall ‘famous’, ‘noble’. "

Rootsweb has a mailing list about the name here:

and an information page here:
