13th Hussars

I am researching my great grandfather's army service, and have found some information but need to know where to look next.

I have a copy of his attestation, as follows -
 Thomas Plaxton, No 1864, 13th Hussars, 16th January 1879 at Canterbury,

and his discharge, as follows -
Thomas Plaxton, No. 1864, 13th Hussars, rank Squadron Sergt. Major, on 31 Jan 1903 at Buckingham.

How do I find what he did in between?

I know he married (I have the certificate) and had children who were born in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cork and Belfast.

Are there any records that give the deployments within the UK?

He's on the LSGC medal roll

1864 SSM Thomas Plaxton, 13 Hussars, recommended for the LSGC on 1/4/1897.

I can't see him on the QSA medal roll though, so perhaps he wasn't in South Africa?

I have Thomas Plaxton in the 1881 census in Canterbury and according to family knowledge he then did his India Service before he married, as he didn't consider India a suitable place to take a wife.

He married in 1887 in Norwich.

My granny was born in 1889 at Maryhill barracks in Glasgow.
Her sisters were born in
1891 - Piershill, Edinburgh
1894 - Ballincollig, Ireland
1896 - Belfast

In the 1901 census the family were at the Yeomanry Barracks in Stowe, Bucks. So I guess he didn't go to South Africa.

By the way, not knowing much about military matters - what is the LSGC medal roll? On his discharge papers the 'medals and decorations' bit says 'nil'.

Long Service & Good Conduct medal 
Means he had 18 years exemplary service behind him.

I too am researching family history. I've found out my Great Great Grandfather, Arthur Finch, was a sergeant in the 13th Hussars - I only found that out this morning when his daughters birth certificate came through the post.

I'm trying to find out anything more I can about him, to help continue with the tree.

I'm not sure when he was born, but I am assuming about 1870. His eldest child was born in 1892 so I guess he married Janet McLean (or MacLean) in 1890-1892 though I'm not sure where. She was born in Sheerness, Kent. Interestingly their children were born:

Ballincollig (Cork) 1892 and 1893
Dundalk 1896
Dublin 1897
Hounslow (Heston Barracks) 1900

In the 1901 census the family is living in 110 Priory Street, Colchester with another family (the Williams') but there are no men-folk registered at the address - where they away, or dead?

By 1916 when one of his daughters (Christine Louise) got married, he was dead.

I'm really keen to find out more about his roots (parents and siblings) to continue tracing that side of the tree back, but also very interested to learn more about him and his role in the army and where and when he died.

Any help out there?

In 1901 the 13th Hussars were in South Africa, Baden Powell served with them & was making a name for himself!
They then went to India, before returning to Europe for WW1.

Had a quick look at the CWGC website & can see no Arthur Finch who served in the 13 Hussars so he may have died in India or South Africa.

It is a list of members of calalry units awarded the Queens South Africa Medal.

The same source has a list at para 2 has the Army Death list for 1901-1905 & your man does not appear on it so he must have survived that war.
