Looking for Lewin family before they arrived in Hunts.
« on: Friday 02 March 07 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me? Ive already got information on the Lewin family in Brington during the 1800s but im attempting to find out where they came from before they resided here. The only piece of information i have with any clue is is the birth place of the eldest Lewin was Clapton, Northampton, in 1881 he was 59.
Could anyone tell me how i go about finding the birth certificate and parents names of this Jonathan Lewin when this is the only information i have to go on?

If he was 59 in 1881 there would not be a birth certificate for him, you need to look for christening records.  But his oldest son was born about 1846, so there's a possibility of finding his marriage certificate to get his father's name, this may be it:

Jonathan Lewin, Jun quarter 1845, St. Pancras Volume 1 page 341, possible spouse Emma Matts (I note that the wife Emma in 1881 is listed as born London, so perhaps he met her there).

Now that census is interesting! I wonder how the jonathan Lewin in brington in 1841 is related to the lewins in northamptonshire in 1841??

Food for thought!

Jonathan Lewin the elder left a Prerogative Court of Canterbury will

Will of Jonathan Lewin, Farmer of Brington , Huntingdonshire 11 May 1847 PROB 11/2056

He might only name his wife (and children if he had any that survived) but he might mention siblings and nieces and nephews. If he does then that might prove a connection to your line. Then even if Charles senior's baptism can't be found you might beable to make a connection through other siblings baptisms.

It might also be worth checking with Huntingdon Record Office whether Charles Lewin senior left a will which they hold to be sure he was Jonathan Lewin juniors' father.

I visited that record office 10 years ago with my nana and we found a will of Charles Lewin but unsure of the people he named in it. There is a grave also in Brington which mentions a Charles of Desborough.

As im fairly new to this research im unsure as to where i should start!
