Burke / Higgins
« on: Saturday 03 March 07 11:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi.

I know this is a long-shot but I'm willing to try anything! My ancestor Mary Burke was born in Ireland circa 1853 but came to England with her parents and older brother Patrick (circa 1846) before 1856.  I know that her parents were:

Richard Burke circa 1821
Bridget Higgins circa 1819

I assume the parents were married sometime between 1839-1845.

I have no idea what area of Ireland the family came from, but am hoping some kind soul who knows more about Irish ancestry than I do may be able to suggest an area based on the Burke/Higgins surnames??

Kindest regards, Julie

Hello Julie,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
