Dairy in Hillhead, Glasgow?
« on: Sunday 04 March 07 20:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi to all

My first adventure on the Scottish boards, on behalf of a contact.

Family lore has it that a great aunt [an Entwistle from Lancashire] married a chap by the name of Temple or Semple [or similar] & lived at Bank Street, Hillhead.

Mr Semple / Temple had a large dairy in the vicinity c 1910 - 1930 we think.

Can anyone shed any light on any of this, please?  Or point me in the direction of useful information, trade directories .. ...

Many thanks
SandraC

Hi Sandra

A good place to start might be to look at their marriage cert. on Scotlands People. This looks a possible entry for the marriage:

1912   SEMPLE   WILLIAM    and ENTWISTLE   FLORENCE ADA HA.   @ MILTON   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   Refs: 644/09 0055

Regards.

The 1913 valuation rolls for Bank Street do not have them listed as residing or occupying business premises there

Hi Monica & Falkyrn

MANY MANY thanks for this

The marriage looks spot on - the family is a nightmare as Florence was named Entwistle but Mr Entwistle had been dead ~ 10 years when she was born.  She was possibly / probably the daughter of Richard Hamer who later married her mother, so the final bit of the name is intriguing!

I'll follow these leads up with my contact as they may help us with some other bits of family lore which connect with the address in Hillhead.

Thanks again for your generosity

Hi again

I registered for Scotland's People & downloaded the image.

BINGO - definitely her [on the stage] & complete with fibs to the Rector re her father [William Entwistle or Richard Hamer but given as Richard Entwistle] & his occupation [stated as bleach works manager, rather than foreman beetler at bleachworks].

I haven't had cause to use the site before as I don't have relatives from north of the border, but the difference is marked  ;D  Especially like the mother's name & maiden name on the certificates - that must reduce the legwork!
