Cornish strays in Rumworth, Lancs
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 10:35 GMT (UK) »
I notice that in 1881 there was a "Little Cornwall" in Rumworth, Lancs - mostly working at a local cotton mill.

The surnames of these people living between Nos. 17 to 40 Heatons Houses, Rumworth are :-
BATTEN / BOWDEN / BURROWS / CLYMOW / FAUCKNER / GUNN / KEAST / LANDRY / LIBBY / MESSER / MILDING / RICHARDS / RICKARDS / TREVENA / WASLEY / WHITE - amongst whom are two of my families.

The reference nos. are RG11/3820 - Folio Nos. from 87 to 91 - Page Nos. from 28 to 35.

If anyone would like more information I can provide it.

Regards,

Allan Halstead

Hello bergs,

Thanks for your interest.

The LANDRY family who were living at 21 Heatons Houses, Rumworth, near Bolton in Lancashire in 1881 (Census Ref RG11/3820/90/34/1341913) are Joseph (aged 30 - a Cotton mill fireman), his wife Mary J (aged 26) and their nephew William H Gandy (aged 5).

Joseph LANDRY was the brother of my Great Grandmother Caroline Jane LANDRY. The family came from the Busveal/Camborne/Feock/Gwennap/Truro area of Cornwall and at some stage their surname became transformed from LAUNDER. Their parents were William LAUNDER (part of family with long-standing roots in the Redruth area) and Jane LIBBY and they had 6 other children.

Living nearby at no. 40 Heatons Houses are a LIBBY family, relatives of my Great Great Grandmother Jane LIBBY.

There are also other LANDRY families living in the Bolton/Manchester area at this time.

I'm in touch with other people researching these names so which particular LANDRYs are you looking for?

Hope we connect, but I'm not holding my breath.

Regards,

alhal

Hello bergs, my Landrys too--St. Neot. I'm a total newbie on rootschat. I got connected at this thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=567593.new;topicseen#new

which a moderator has merged. I'm so new at this! Anyhoo--I need more sleep as a relative of mine, we go back to a Landry marriage 12 July 1600 St. Neot, is in Australia which is 14 hours ahead of me!

I hope we can connect and maybe my Landrys and yours have something in common. My genealogy chart is on the thread. I daren't rename it or I'll go crazy!

Hello alhal, Allan,

Quote

I think so. I'm new to rootschat but I'm cautiously optimistic that, on a first boo through your long list of Landrys in your reply to bergs,
Quote
On 21 Sep 1629 in St Neot George LAUNDRIE married Anne BURGIS
On 3 Jul 1632 in St Neot Thomasine LAUNDRY married Robert DAWE
On 15 Jun 1635 in St Neot Martha LAUNDRY married Matthew OTTRAM
On 9 Feb 1646 in St Neot Jone LANDRY married John KEANE

These 4 marriages (could Thomasine be Tamsyn?) are possibles. For a start.

I am directly descended from

They had nine children

I am descended from William. Here's my chart

I chanced upon this thread three weeks ago
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=567593.new;topicseen#new

Early this morning Toronto time who should surface but a long lost--400 years lost--Australian "rellie", cocksie. Cocksie looks perhaps to have broken the Landry "1600 barrier" for me, with her/his suggestion on the parentage of Elizabeth Willes:
Quote
Elizabeth Willes is interesting.  Cornwall Family History Society database has multiple variations of the spelling of this surname - Willes, Wills, Will, Wille, Wil, Wylls etc.  She COULD have been the daughter of Willm Will and Jone Hawton - chr. Feb 1580 St Neot

I would be very surprised if we're not connected.
