Hi
Have you looked at the 1881 census, James should be found somewhere. This census is free to look at at either familysearch or ancestry.co.uk; you could also try FreeBMD.
I have come across the Christmas surname when researching my own family - it was so unusual it stuck in my mind even though it's not linked to my tree. I did a trawl of Phillimores Marriage Registers for Bucks and found the following

On my ancestry cd for Bucks were the following refs:
Epiphany Session. 1692-93. Martha Stokes and Richard Christmas, butcher, both of Wendover, for bastardy
Chepping Wycombe. A John Christmas is referenced as getting into debt and the courts ordered a newly appointed bridewell keeper to give him £10 per year out of his salary.
Wendover 1698/99. William Christmas, constable, fined for not making their returns.
Francis Christmas mentioned for having had wages witheld. 1705/12.
Richard Christmas was a petty constable of Denham, 1705-12 sessions.
William Christmas sworn as a petty constable/tithing man 1705/12 sessions
William Christmas named as a freeholder by petty constables 1705/12
There are also a few references to Christmas in Huntingdonshire.
Hope this helps
