Manchester census 1851
« on: Sunday 11 March 07 16:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I wonder can anyone help me?  My Gt. Gt. Grandfather appears in an 1851 Manchester trade directory at No. 3 Back Holgate Street although I can not find him on the 1851 census.  I have been told that some parts of the census for that year and area were water damaged and am wondering whether this is the case here.  I have been spoiled with the easy address finder on the 1881 census and wonder whether anyone has any handy tips for finding an address (if not a person) on the 1851!?  I am also told that Back Holgate Street may have been part of the then Infamous Angel Meadow.......does anyone know?

Hi Skeandhu

Welcome to Rootschat!  ;)

I have moved your thread, as those who read this board will have better local knowledge.

Would it help if you gave your ancestor's name - or do you know that he has left this address by the time of the census?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi, thanks for that.  His name was Matthew Moore, and he was a weaver.  I only 'presumed' that he was not at the address at the time of the census because I couldn't find an entry but, I can't find the Street either, so that may not be the case!

Hi Skeandhu

Large parts of the Manchester & Salford 1851 census were damaged by water during the time they were in storage & so they remained unfilmed.

The Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society undertook a special project to try to read them using all possible lighting & other techniques and large parts [not all, sadly] have been transcribed by the MLFHS and are now available on CD-ROM or via the family history online site http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/   [subscription required].

The areas concerned are:
Ashton-under-Lyne
Oldham below Town
Prestwich
Chorlton-on-Medlock
Salford Regent Road
Salford Greengate
Pendleton & Pendlebury
Hulme
Ardwick
Manchester St George
London Road
Deansgate

There will be other missing parts of other census returns - these are usually listed on the big search site / CDs but the Manchester 1851 are well known for their soggyness!
