Jane? Kirtley - birth details -

A bit of a brick wall with this one, Jane (if that is her name, come to the conclusion that it can't be) is listed on the 1871 census aged 4
"Jane Kirtley, niece, 4, born Pelton Fell, County Durham"

I have her marriage certificate, and death certificate, where she is named Jane - her father was Anthony -

would really love to find her birth certificate, and obviously her mother.

When & where did she marry? Married name? I'll try and find her on a later Census to see if her birthplace is the same.

I have the following info -

Marriage, 16/11/1893, at Darlington Registry Office, to Thomas Wennington -

Jane Kirtley, 25 years, spinster, stanhope Road, Darlington, Father, Anthony,
deceased, miner.

The birth place on the other census' that i have seen all state Houghton Le spring - except the 1871 which states Pelton Fell.

Hope this helps as I would love to find "Jane"

George Kirtley, son, tailor, born houghton le spring, co durham

Margaret Kirtley, niece, 7, born, houghton le spring, co durham

Jane Kirtley, niece, 4, born, Pelton Fell County Durham.



It looks like she could have been living at her grandparents house ?
I have requested various birth certificates from the registrar, but they always come back, that the father isn't Anthony, so I conclude that her name on the birth certificate is not Jane, even tho on her marriage certificate, and death certificate she is "Jane".

Yes I must admit when I saw the two girls recorded on the 1881 Census as daughters of William 81 and Jane 78 I thought it was a bit odd!! I've checked the image and apart from KIRTLEY transcribed as KIRSLEY it's right.

I've also checked the 1871 image. I agree with you that the nieces are probably grandchildren - both George and Anthony are recorded as Married, but there is no sign of either wives.

Here's the 1861 Census entry:

I've checked the Birth indexes 1865-1868 for Jane and there is an entry that might be worth checking:
4Q 1865 KIRKLEY Jane Hannah Houghton le Spring 10a 384

The only entry for Chester le Street (Pelton) is:
2Q 1865 KIRTLEY Ann 10a 444

My GrGrandmothers birth entry is missing - her nine siblings entries are all there - I've had to make do with her Baptism record.

If you go looking for Jane's baptism I would start with Houghton as the family seemed to be there for many years and most of the entries in the Civil Reg Indexes for this area are for Houghton.

Hi Helen,

thanx for all your researching on this one, at least I am not going mad, with the fact that I cannot find "Jane".

Firstly I might try for the sister, Margaret's birth certificate, then at least I will have their mother's details - have a couple of possibles, from BMD (which seems to have been upgraded as is really quick!)

Mar 1864 - Margaret Ann 10a 381 - houghton le spring

Sep 1864 - Margaret Ann 10a 387 - houghton

do you know where I search for baptism records ? or just in the usual way on the net ?
