Census lokups-Fisher's in Fife?!! HELP!!
« on: Wednesday 14 March 07 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Ive hit a bit of a brick wall and was wondering if any of you good peole out there could help me. Im looking for my g g grandmother, Ethel Fisher. Her full name was Ethel Violet Fisher, she was born in or around Fife in the 1879 period. Her dad was Robert Fisher, and her mother was Emily. Can anybody find this family in the 1891 census please? Ethel married in Fife in 1903, so thats the only clue I have as to where she came from.
Thanks and regards
Matthew :)

Looking on the scotlandspeople website, there is only one Ethel Fisher listed in all of Scotland on the 1891 census but she was 5 and is recorded in St Peters district of Dundee.
Andrew, Donald (Wester Highlands), Muckersie (Perth), Symon(s) (Dundee)

Hi Matthew,

Can you please tell me what Ethel Violet Fisher mothers maiden name was! It will be on the marriage certificate.

Also can you tell me her age when she married, this would give me a better idea of when she was born as I can't find a birth for her on Scotlands People.  You say it was about 1879 she was born but there isn't a birth record for her on Scotlands People either.

Elizabeth

Hello Elizabeth, Ethels maiden name was Fisher, she married John Herd in Auchtertool, in 1903.
Her parents are down as Robert James Fisher, her mother is Emily ??, possibly Rafferay, although Ive never known that surname to exist!
Sorry I cant give you more info, maybe Ethel's family were English, Welsh, Irish, Im not sure. Its frustrating not knowing though ; Ethel is my g g grandmother.
Regards
Matthew

Thanks Trish, your help is appreciated, Ethel just isnt anywhere. I cant even find her death certificate in Scotland, even with the married and maiden names entered! Ive never been told about anything strange in this part of the family, now I admit I am starting to wonder! :-\
Thanks again for your research :)

I was beginning to wonder if the father was an invented name for the marriage - it has happened many times - but I couldn't find her in scotland, searching only with a given name and her mother's given name - very tricky one - don't give up on it

Trish

Given her age, she may have lived later than the end of the death indexes on SP - or she may have remarried  ???

Matthew,

You don't seem to mention either the 1881 or the 1901 censuses .........*

Do you have either of these and, if so, what is her birthplace ........

Also, from the marriage certificate, what was her Dad's occupation; and were her parents listed as deceased?  And what was Ethel's age and occupation at marriage.

JAP
*Both available on ScotlandsPeople

Hi JAP, I havent got 1881 or 1901 census extracts for Ethel, I couldnt find her.
Apologies, I had lost the certificate after my PC crashed and had not looked at it on SP, was going from memory, but going on the certificate:
Ethel Violet Fisher's father Robert was a Coachman at the time of his daughters wedding (1903). However, his wife, Emily (cant read maiden name), was deceased, so she must have been young!
Ethel Violet and John Herd were married under the Established Church of Scotland, Auchtertool, Fife.
At time of marriage, Ethel was a domestic servant and spinster, aged 21, whilst John Herd was 31 and I cannot make out his occupation ???
