The Diamond, Belfast?
« on: Friday 16 March 07 18:54 GMT (UK) »
Someone gives their address as The Diamond, Belfast. Multimap does show it, but I can't see what it's pointing to...there's a red circle in Lyndhurst Gardens, and Mount Gilbert College is nearby, but I can't really see what's going on. What was/is the Diamond, and what kind of people would live there, does anyone know?

And a Happy Saint Urho Day to all...   What, you've never heard of him? Well, apparently he drove the grasshoppers out of Finland and saved the country's grape crops. The fact that St Urho was unknown before the 1950s and Finland doesn't have a grape crop is...immaterial really...here in Minnesota it's a great excuse to get a running start on St Paddy's Day... ;D

Okay, I've been told there is another Diamond in Monaghan, apparently a more likely location. If only I could locate Monaghan on a map... :P

There are 'Diamonds' in almost every plantation town.
They were a feature of how they laid out the new towns.
Coffey, Cummins [Rathfalla, Tipperary], Cummins [Skirke, Laois], Curran, Dillon [Clare], Fogarty [Garran, Laois/Tipp], Hughes, Keshan (Keeshan), Loughman [Harristown and Killadooley, Laois], Mallon [Armagh], Malone, Markham [Caherkine, Clare], McKeon(e) [Sligo/Kilkenny/Waterford], McNamara, Meagher, Prescott [Kilkenny/Waterford/Wexford?], Rafferty, Ryan, Sullivan, Tobin

"Diamond" refers to two (or more I presume) streets/roads which meet, sometimes in a town or village or not.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
