HELP.... :( POST COMPLETED thank you

I have been frenetically searching for a record of birth/baptism for my GGgrandfather 'John PUFFETT' (b.c.1849 Filkins,Oxfordshire in the Parish of Witney.... so I believe)

According to his marriage cert.(m.18/10/1875 - Ann TITCHENER, in Filkins) his father was also called John. On this it also states his age as 26 and Ann's as 24,both of Filkins.

I have trawled through countless records online, spent a fortune on www.1837online.com........searched Ancestory..............yet still I can not find him

Can anybody point me in the right direction so that I can move on with this branch of my tree...so I can send for his birth cert......and establish whom his parents were.

I found a John Puffett b. Filkins on the 1871 census.   He was polled in the district of Bradwell. I see a great difference in age as this John would have been born in 1836 or so.

John Puffett, Head, 35 yrs, b Filkins, Oxfordshire

Perhaps someone will be able to give you the full entry.

As there's always the possibility that his birth wasn't registered, perhaps it would be a good idea to organise a search of the baptism registers for that parish.

It was still to be a couple of decades before penalties were imposed for not registering births so many did slip the net in those early days.

It definately would seem that his birth was not registered.

It is also appearing more likely that he wasn't even born or baptised in or near Filkins as a previous search of baptism records for there and surrounding areas ,came up blank

Well it seems I will have to move my search 2 Sherborne , Glos. next as this is where the only possible parents I have so far come up with were married....John PUFFET and Mary LOCK  m.18/2/1840

Also look for mis-spelling of the name, and take a look at freebmd there are some John Puffetts on there.

Have you tried searching/sending for  the birth certificates of his siblings

This from freebmd could be one ....

  PUFFETT    Mary Ann    Dec q.  1861 Farringdon  2c 237 ......

 It is possible that his parents married after John & Thomas' births & they were registered in their mother's name
