Found an entry on the IGI for the death of a Peter Westwater, 1856 in Slamannan, giving two spouses:

Rachel Love, b. 01/Jul/1794, marriage 01/Oct/1821, St. Ninian's, Stirling
Agnes Wilson, b.1799, marriage c. 1842

Could this be confusing Agnes Wilson with Agnes Williamson?

Are these submitted details on IGI? You have the OPR of the marriage with Agnes as Williamson in 1849. Maybe whoever has submitted this info has worked from the 1851 Census where Agnes is wrongly entered as Wilson:

AGNES WILLIAMSON  Marriages: Spouse: PETER WESTWATER
Marriage:  JUL 1849  New Monkland, Lanark, Scotland

And Agnes in 1851 with a few of her Stevenson sons:

Peter Weatherton 55, collier, b. Westfield, Clackmannanshire
Agnes Wilson    52, b. Westfield, Clackmannanshire
Agnes Westwater 8, b. New Monkland
Alexander Stevenson    16, b. Saint Ninians, Stirlingshire
John Stevenson    18, b. Saint Ninians, Stirlingshire
Robert Stevenson 9, b. Saint Ninians, Stirlingshire

Address: Rawyards Cooks Back Land No 2, New Monkland, Lanarkshire

Regards.

Monica - yes, it seems to be a submitted entry. Will try and check through again tomorrow - it's late, my brain is overloaded and I'm off to bed!

Thanks for your continuing interest in these perverse ancestors of mine!  ;)

Hi, Have just been checking through some details and this definitely looks like a mis-spelling of Wilson for Williamson, as the detials for Alexander, John and Robert all seem to tally exactly with what I had already!  :)

All good stuff!! Thanks again!

My original query was how the name "Caldwell" came to be used for Margaret Caldwell Stevenson - I believe this has now been resolved:

Margaret's Grandfather, John Stevenson, had a brother called Thomas who married one Isabel Caldwell. Isabel would have been margaret's Father's aunt.

A bit tenuous, I agree, but all the same - it makes some sort of sense!

Thankyou to all who have helped on this quest!  ;)

Stoney

Have you been able to verify Thomas as brother to John through some source?

My great great granny's grandparents were John Stevenson (c.1800-c.1842) and Agnes Williamson (c.1799-1858). Their son John (1832-1891) was my great great granny's dad.
