Clingan - Directories Kirkpartrick Durham/Kirkcudbright
« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 00:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone who has access to 1800's Street/Trader Directories for Kirkcudbrightshire do a look up for me please.
Interested in any Clingan's, but in particular Andrew Clingan, my Gt Gt Grandfather who has always been known to be a grocer/merchant.
Shop/living accomodation thought to have been on St David Street, Kirkpatrick Durham. Can anyone confirm please.
Also now found out he was also publican as well (1841), Inn Keeper (1851) and in 1861 living in the Temperance Hotel, Kirkpatrick Durham.
Need to find out if all descriptions of occupation are for same building.
Thanks
Ian

Just found this post, so dragging it up again!

I lived in KPD for quite a few years, actually in St David street. Ont eh corner, at the crossroads that building was a shop/Post Office, before that I seem to remember it was the Temperance Hotel, and something to do with Oddfellows and/or Freemasons.
For many years, since 1903 I think, there has only been one pub in the village, but before then there were 7 at one time. :o :)
Will have a look in my Book of Kirkpatrick Durham and see if I can find anything out for you.

Funny thing is, I was just looking at the book this morning, whilst looking for soemthing else, then was researching something to do with KPD for my own research, and it threw up this forum; delighted to be here.

Hi Mrs L
Have a copy of the Rev Starks book. His name appears quite a lot on certificates I have re my lot in KPD.
Have you seen the paper/study done on the Social History of KPD. Makes interesting reading as well as providing a lot of info re both the place and people.
My Gt/GF and his family lived opposite the only pub left in KPD. Now there is a surprise :-)
My Gt Gt GF was Andrew Clingan who had a shop, one of the pubs/hotel and appears to have been a bit of a lad in his day.

I haven't seen the paper/study done, but am trying to get hold of one done by a Linda Cowan - is that the same one?
I've come across the name Clingan before, up there; fairly sure I went to school with some of them, possibly in Castle Douglas.
I think the pub might be shut now, but when I was there it was run by the Great Aunt/Grandmother (or similar) of David Coulthard. Lovley, unspoilt pub.  Funnily enough, I live across the road from a pub now - no surprise here! :)

Hi Ian

Pigot's 1837 directory is online:

Unfortunately there don't seem to be an Clingans in it. Maybe you'll find him listed in another year.
