MY LUNATIC
« on: Tuesday 20 March 07 16:46 GMT (UK) »
I am, after 5 years still trying to trace my GG Grandfather on the 1871 census. He was born William George Simmons 1822 in Bedford. moved to Barnsley, S. Yorkshire in c 1840 married in 1842 to Eliza and I find him in 1851,1861 in the marital home with children. in 1881 and 1891 in Sheffield Lunatic Asylum and he died there in 1895.
In 1871 Eliza Simmons (census says Simmonds) was classed as Head, with the children in the marital home.
On the 1881 census it says William Simmons - Shoemaker - born Barnsley and age 49 (that is incorrect)
On the 1891 census  it says WS aged 60 yrs. - Shoemaker - born Barnsley (wrong)
Sheffield Lunatic Asylum or South Yorkshire Lunatic Asylum as it was when first opened in 1873, so he was not there in 1871.
I have tried initials and name for Wakefield Asylum, which is nearest to Barnsley, I have put his name in for anywhere in the Country, no luck, is anyone out there able to help me with this one please........

Carol

In 1871 there is a WS, born 1821, Barnsley in the West York County Lunatic Asylum at Stanley cum Wrenthorpe.

Thanks so much for your help.

Because on the 1881 it said Williams Simmons, then on the 1891 it said WS
I was not looking for SW, it is the right one, he was a Shoemaker, and I am sure when they asked him where did he come from, because he lived in Barnsley he must have just said Barnsley, not Bedford where he was born.

again, many thanks.
